Going in the "way back" machine for this crype. Back to the initial MLB amateur draft. 1965. Before even an old guy like myself was born. The Cubs had the sixth pick overall, and there were only 20 teams in the MLB at this time.
RICK JAMES-P 1965 1ST ROUND(6TH PICK)
No, this isn't the late funkmeister Rick James, known for "Superfreak" fame. This Rick(who probably doesn't like MC Hammer either) was the Cubs first ever draft pick. Granted many teams probably didn't know what they were doing, and some teams didn't want the draft to take place.(i.e. the Yankees who had just been "buying" the best amateurs since Lou Gehrig) Rick Monday was the first overall pick by the Oakland A's. (He would eventually become my favorite player when he made his way to the Cubs in the 70's)
Rick James had a very uneventful Cubs career. Playing in one major league game, allowing 7 earned runs over 4 plus innings for a career 13.50 ERA. 3 years later he was out of baseball, after posting a 1-5 5.18 ERA in his final minor league season.
As you have probably surmised from my previous posts, what really makes Rick James a bad pick are the guys picked after him. Three names: Johnny Bench, Tom Seaver and Nolan Ryan. If there was a Hall of Fame for Hall of Famers(that just had legends); these three would all be in there. Can you imagine if the Cubs would have had any of these guys? Neither can I.
Welcome to the team Rick.
CURRENT CRYPE TEAM:
HITTERS: TY GRIFFEN, BROOKS KIESCHNICK, GARY SCOTT, EARL CUNNINGHAM, RYAN HARVEY, DARREN JACKSON
PITCHERS: MARK PAWALEK, HERMAN SEGELKE, BEN CHRISTENSON, RICK JAMES

Who will be the first to post a "I'm Rick James, bitch" video or gif?
