Just used a test account - everything is fine in Chrome, but even my trick doesn't work on Firefox. I suspect there is an incompatibility issue with the most recent Wordpress update (which, with apologies, was more important to take care of than waiting on compatibility with the comments). I'll see if I can get the issue fixed (but sometimes as Wordpress evolves, features die - if that happens, I'll have to find a new extended comments option, which could take some time).

Good thinking - there was a site update today. When I first loaded a page, the comment box showed up for me like it does in Luke's picture. But then I clicked on HTML, and then back on Visual, and the extended options were back. And they've stayed back.

Anyone else?

Nope. THEY GONE! (And I'm gonna keep saying that until they come back).

Did you make sure the page had fully finished loading before trying? Just making sure. Also, browser info would help.

Yes. Safari 5.1.7. Same thing on Chrome. Both on OS X 10.7.4.

Fresh logouts/login, same thing.

It doesn't really matter at this point, but it's strange that it works on Chrome (on Mac) for me, but not you. There's really no difference between us at that point.

I think that feature might be dead for a little while - I've already started the search process for a replacement, and I remember what a bitch it was to find and implement that one.

You might give that search a day or two, Brett. I was having problems running Chrome on Windows Vista, but on my CR48 (Chrome OS), it's working just like it did before.

I wonder if the cache might be coming into play here. The CR48 doesn't hang on to much a cache from session to another, but Windows is notorious for clogging hard drives with old, useless data. OS X comes somewhere in between.

I'll give that fix a shot on the Windows box later tonight and let you know.

Odd: there are now a few boxes (bold, italics, something else) above the reply box, but I'm looking at the site from my iPad now. Never seen those before from the iPad Safari.

I implemented some SUPER simple back-ups, just in case. They allow bold, italics, links, and quotes. And then, if you're paying attention, you'll see below the reply box that you can add an image, too. The problem is I can no longer limit these options to JUST registered users, which is my STRONG preference.

For now, I've deactivated those simple options to give Luke's theory a chance for a day or so. I stopped seeing the editor on Chrome after I cleared my cache, so I may have just been lucky that I was still seeing it.

I'm guessing it's gone for good (until the relevant plugin is updated (not bloody likely, since it's been about two years since the last update), but we'll give it a day or two just to make sure.

Please keep me posted on what you see.

Ok, pretty good chance I'm dead wrong. As a control case I just dumped the cache on the CR48, and the tools vanished after I reloaded the page.

I've never seen them on my ipad/iphone so I'm not sure what I should be looking for since 99% of my time on BN is on a ipad

You are indeed safe to assume. You would also be correct that they are still gone.

Ok, the simpler (but crappier) tools are now implemented (might take a few visits for your cache to clear. You'll see little tags above the comment box for styling text, and the ability to add an image below the comment box.

... and as soon as I type that and hit the main page, I see that not only are the "simpler (but crappier)" tools there, so are the old, more elaborate ones. Kooky.
