I truly do hate rooting against the Cubs. The logical part of my brain frequently recognizes when it would be for the best that the Cubs lose, but, as the games are being played, I can't bring myself to affirmatively root for mistakes, bad pitches, opponent runs.
That might be different today.
The Cubs are within a game - in either direction - of FIVE other teams in the standings right now. Draft pick order in baseball is far, far less important than in the NBA or NFL - the difference between picking 5th and picking 6th is virtually non-existent.
But the different between picking 5th and picking 10th could be significant. And that's what is potentially at stake today: the Cubs could end up picking as high as 5th next year, or as low as 10th, depending on how things shake out.
So, today - and only today - I'm a Padres fan. Feel free to crucify me...

Perhaps the only part I feel good about - they did a good job this past year, and it'll be a new regime anyway.but then the front office has to make a good draft decision.... uh oh

If everything works out I plan on leading a final game day thread of 2011, although I'll be jumping between the games that matter, at least there will be some meaningful baseball for the final day of the season
