The Padres are said to be once again shopping their third-sacker(but they are said to be asking alot)...I know this is a bit of "out of the box" thinking but I would like to see the Cubs pursue him...you can't have all 22-25 year olds as your core, and as much as we want to say "we have our 3B of the future and its(fill in the blank)"...odds are only a couple of guys will stick...so for us to say...our lineup will be Jackson, Lake, Castro, Rizzo, Vitters, Baez, Soler, etc, etc, is not realistic....we need a couple guys who are going to be late 20's early 30's when we can compete again...
as much as many of us who frequent this board would be fine seeing them suck for a couple years, there are still natives out there who are restless... if we lose 100 this year, next year you have to shoot to be around .500 at least or you will start feeling it in the pocketbook...you will need some decent vets to do that...not Mather-type vets either...

Under control thru 2014...I'm not sure. I doubt the Cubs would be ultra competitive in that time frame, and I'd hate to see them give up a lot and not be able to resign him. That said, he'd be fairly cheap for the next two years, and if the cubs could lock him up for another 3 years or so I would gladly take him.

San Diego has been linked to Vitters in the past.
A lot would depend on how much the Padres are asking for. I would probably do either Brett Jackson or Trey McNutt along with Josh Vitters for Headley (and a spare part or two on each side to balance it), but I have no idea if that sort of a deal would interest the Padres at all.
His number are really hammered by playing half his games in that giant cavern in San Diego. His road OPS is a very healthy .856. If the Cubs could trade for him, I imagine they would push to extend him before his numbers jumped as a result of playing his home games in Wrigley.
