Latest Mock Drafts: Agreement on Allen, Kizer Over Watson, New Names All Over, More

Just when you think you have a grasp on how an NFL (mock) Draft will play out, new options find a way to present themselves.

So let’s dive into some of the recent mock drafts to see where the Chicago Bears will add some young, impact talent.

  • Matt Miller of Bleacher Report has a two-round mock wherein the Bears address needs on both sides of the ball. Jonathan Allen (you’ll be reading more about him later in this post) is Miller’s pick for the Bears at third overall, but Washington’s John Ross is the surprise selection in the second round (not so much as his selection being a potential overdraft, but in the sense that he has Ross as the third receiver off the board behind Mike Williams (13th, Arizona) and Corey Davis (14th, Philadelphia) in what projects to be a deep receiver class).
  • [adinserter block=”1″]

  • Ross skipped his senior season to enter this draft after catching 81 passes for 1,150 yards and scored 17 touchdowns last year. He had ACL surgery in 2015, but rebounded to become the Associated Press’ pick for Pac-12’s Offensive Player of the Year and an ESPN First-Team All-American.
  • And in this video, you can see why:
  • As for Jonathan Allen, add Daniel Jeremiah’s latest mock at NFL.com to the list of mock drafts that link the Alabama defensive lineman to the Bears. The more you see Allen and the Bears tied together in mock drafts, the easier it is to remember how much front seven help the Bears really need after ranking in the bottom half of the league in 2016.
  • [adinserter block=”2″]

  • Of course, Jeremiah isn’t alone, because both of ESPN’s top draft analysts – Mel Kiper Jr. and Todd McShay – have the Bears scooping up Allen with the third overall pick. Kiper’s first mock had Allen going to Chicago and so does McShay’s latest. ESPN teammate Jeff Dickerson writes that unless the Bears fall head-over-heels for a quarterback like Clemson’s Deshaun Watson or North Carolina’s Mitch Trubisky, picking a top-flight defensive player is a “no-brainer” for the Bears.
  • Even though the building consensus seems to have Allen to the Bears on draft day, there are mock drafts that see things differently. For starters, a CSN Chicago mock by Scott Krinch has the Bears passing on Allen altogether and instead drafting defensive lineman Solomon Thomas from Stanford.
  • Thomas might be undersized for his position, but that hasn’t held him back from thriving against bigger offensive linemen in the past – and he’s even drawn a J.J. Watt comparison in the process. Krinch’s mock passes on a quarterback for Chicago, because he believes the Bears will trade their second-round pick and a third-round selection in 2018 to the Patriots for Jimmy Garoppolo.
  • With that said there are two recent mocks that have the Bears passing on Allen and other top-rated defensive prospects to draft a quarterback, but neither has them choosing  Trubisky or Watson. Instead, both Dane Brugler of CBS Sports and Chris Roling of Bleacher Report have Chicago as the landing spot for Notre Dame quarterback DeShone Kizer. Brugler describes the Bears quarterback situation as disheartening and notes that while tape shows youthful mistakes, Kizer also has shown poise and has ideal physical traits.

  • And finally, Sports Illustrated’s Chris Burke has the Bears going in a different direction in his mock as LSU safety Jamal Adams comes off the board at No. 3. Because while drafting a quarterback would be tempting there, Burke notes that defensive standouts such as Allen and Alabama linebacker Reuben Foster might be too good to pass up. Burke adds that if the Bears can’t land Eric Berry in free agency, drafting Adams is the next best thing.
