At this point in the offseason, the real challenge is separating the roster moves that are possible from the ones that are plausible.
A John Fox-Brock Osweiler reunion seems like it falls only into the former category, as the erstwhile Denver Broncos backup quarterback got his shot in the driver’s seat with the Houston Texans in 2016, only to fall so flat that he was benched by the end of the season.
The Texans are now already looking for their next quarterback, which could have Osweiler on the move again, even after signing a $72 million contract just last year.
Bleacher Report NFL columnist Brad Gagnon lays out a scenario in which the Houston Texans trade for Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo, thus, allowing the team to cut Osweiler one year into his major contract. From there, Jay Cutler is released by the Chicago Bears, allowing Osweiler to slide into his new role with the Bears on a one-year deal with the head coach who drafted him out of Arizona State.

As for Cutler, he lands with the Buffalo Bills on a two-year deal, and Jimmy Garoppolo stays in New England.

Tying Osweiler and Fox together would allow GM Ryan Pace to analyze the present and future of his team simultaneously, especially if the quarterback came on a one-year pillow contract. If Osweiler doesn’t prove himself under center in Chicago, the short-term hit is minimal for the Bears, especially in a year where the quarterback talent available at the top of the draft comes with so many questions.
And if Osweiler doesn’t develop in ways Pace sees fit, he could easily cut bait with a head coach who would be entering the final year of his contract in 2018. In this scenario, Pace would get a clean slate and a chance to develop on his long-term vision of the team with a fresh set of eyes at head coach
Again, it isn’t a plausible scenario. But at this point of the offseason, possibilities are endless.
