Let’s get the laughs out of the way now.
Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune reports the Bears will sign free agent kicker Chris Blewitt (giggle) to a contract. It’s an unfortunate last name for a kicker, more so when he’s joining a franchise whose last kicker was shown the door after missing what would have been a game-winning kick in the playoffs. Blewitt. Blew it. Get it? Alright, let’s move on.
Blewitt (okay, it’s still funny) won the second kicking competition that’s been held at Halas Hall this offseason and joins Redford Jones as the only kickers on the Bears roster (at least, once Cody Parkey is officially removed). In addition, Biggs makes note that Blewitt won the Jamie Kohl field-goal kicking competition that helped put him on the map. Kohl has worked with some noteworthy and successful kickers including Jake Elliott (Eagles), Wil Lutz (Saints), and Harrison Butker (Chiefs). And while that’s worth sharing, he has also worked with Cody Parkey and Roberto Aguayo. Hey, you can’t win ’em all!
Beyond having a name that doesn’t roll off the tongue when talking about kicking, Blewitt is best known for kicking a 48-yard game-winner against Deshaun Watson’s No. 2-ranked Clemson squad in their house:

Bears GM Ryan Pace said he would explore every avenue in search of a new kicker and he is certainly doing that. We won’t know who will emerge from this kicking competition until it plays out, but at least the names will grab your attention.
