First off, I only saw about a half hour with the sound down(out to dinner)...and maybe this is just my age and a generation gap talking...but aren't sports alraedy competitions that have winners or losers? How can you give an award for "Best Team" and try to compare the L.A. Kings, the Miami Heat, and the Alabama Crimson Tide(along with like seven other teams)? They have an award for best basketball team...it's called the NBA Championship.

This like getting a participation medal in any sport above the age of 8. Completely worthless.

The problem with the ESPYs is that their first year they had Jimmy V's amazing speech and have lived off that magic for all these years. Its basically a show for all things that make ESPN so annoying: top plays, players acting stupid, catch phrases, and poor reporting. I watched it the first three years but as it focused more of the silly it got increasingly dumb. It will be around for years because high school kids love that kind of stupidity, and I'm guessing they have stopped trying to regain the magic of Jimmy V's speech.

Here's the speech for those of you that may never have seen it:

Thank you for that! I had NOT seen the speech before and as sad as it was realizing that he would die a little over a month later, I truly enjoyed seeing it.

“To me, there are three things we all should do every day. We should do this every day of our lives. Number one is laugh. You should laugh every day. Number two is think. You should spend some time in thought. And number three is, you should have your emotions moved to tears, could be happiness or joy. But think about it. If you laugh, you think, and you cry, that's a full day. That's a heck of a day. You do that seven days a week, you're going to have something special.”

I love this quote and have it in my classroom. Laugh, Think, Cry.
