Clinton-Dix’s Alabama Beef, Alternative Draft Options, Trubisky Snubbed, and Other Bullets

After sitting out the last episode of Talkin’ Toros, yours truly returned to podcast format to talk shop with Adam and Myles. We discussed the annoyance of the Bulls not conducting a coaching search (again), some fun ways the offseason can play out, and what has been an entertaining postseason. You can check it out here and even like us on Facebook.

  • Ha Ha Clinton-Dix has a legitimate beef with Alabama:

  • Clinton-Dix shared a screen image of his student account balance on Twitter, which showed he owed the school $1.00. And because he has a debt, the new Bears safety says the school is withholding his diploma. Ahhhh, the days of dealing with the bursar’s office are not days I want to re-live any time soon. Good luck rounding up 100 pennies, Mr. Clinton-Dix. Better do it quickly before they tack on some other random charges.
  • Also on Clinton-Dix’s Twitter page is a brief hype video starring Alabama running back prospect Josh Jacobs, who met with the Bears during the pre-draft period. Jacobs is the highest-rated running back in this draft class and would be a welcome addition to the Bears backfield. I’m not sure how Chicago can go about acquiring him, but we have seen GM Ryan Pace do wilder things.
  • Josh Jacobs has #moves:
  • There is some buzz surrounding Temple’s Ryquell Armstead as a running back prospect who could be a fit with the Bears. JJ Stankevitz of NBC Sports Chicago explains:

  • “He runs like his hair is on fire” might be my favorite description of a running back’s style I’ve heard in 2019. Hats off to you, JJ.
  • To be clear, the Bears don’t have to take a running back in the third round. As we have discussed before, this is a running back class that is deep and talented in the middle rounds. Therefore, there is no reason to reach for a particular player at that specific position when a player with a similar grade is likely to be available with the team’s next selection. The Bears would be wise not to repeat mistakes of drafts past.
  • Again, they don’t have to draft a running back with pick No. 87:
  • TCU edge rusher Ben Banogu stands out to Evan Silva as a draft weekend possibility. And why not? Banogu has picked up 8.5 sacks in each of his last two seasons at TCU and collected 34.5 tackles-for-loss while playing for the Horned Frogs. And while I realize highlight reels are created for players to stand out, Banogu seems to have something special going on here:
  • The Bears are expected to pick up Leonard Floyd’s fifth-year option, but his career with the team beyond that is going to be up in the air. Cap space figures to be tight moving forward, and as we learned this offseason, it’s impossible to bring back all of your favorite players in this era of cap management. With that in mind, the Bears would be wise to snag a pass-rusher with upside if he happens to be the best player on their board when they are on the clock with pick No. 87.
  • How Mitch Trubisky vs. Patrick Mahomes didn’t make David Carr’s top-5 quarterback matchups of 2019 is beyond me:

  • I have a hunch Trubisky would be on a mid-season list if one ever comes around. Especially if he is truly “on his way” to some bigger and better things:
  • To be fair, Trubisky’s whole class was panned and criticized as a whole.
  • Oh, and you better believe they know it.
  • This is certainly one way to think about the Bears’ 2019 draft class:
  • Moving forward, the Bears won’t have to do this pick-for-player dance if they prove to be better at drafting in the years to come.
  • Four of the most popular Bears of the 2000s are going to be at #Bears100:
  • Jonah Trinnaman could be a fun addition to the Bears’ 90-man roster if he makes it through this upcoming mini-camp:
  • Trinnaman was a standout at BYU and met with the Bears in March 2018. He went undrafted, was scooped up by the Cardinals as a UDFA, waived in mid-May, signed on with the Jets a week later, but was waived/injured in August. Because the Bears can’t have enough speed, there’s nothing wrong with seeing what Trinnaman can bring to the table during mini-camp.
  • Bryce Callahan was pretty darn good with the Bears last year:
  • But in Week 2, Bears fans will get a different look at Callahan as the Broncos’ slot corner.
