Montgomery’s Destiny, Raymond’s Journey, Davis’ Fit, Trubisky’s Pick, and Other Bullets

In addition to nerding out on Star Wars and baseball, I was able to squeeze in some time with friends and family at a 2-year-old’s birthday party. That kid is going to have dinosaurs to play with from here until the end of time.

  • There’s always next year, Mitch:
  • Find your favorite Bears rookie:
  • Alright, there is a good chance David Montgomery is going to be your favorite rookie … and I can see why:

  • “We kinda felt like it was destined,” Montgomery said of the Bears trading up to draft him, via Larry Mayer of the Bears’ official site. Montgomery considers it to be a blessing to land in Chicago, and the fit seems all-too-perfect. He clearly has an appreciation for the running backs who came before him and seems like an ideal candidate to carry the torch being passed down.
  • It sounds like Montgomery is ready to ball out in Matt Nagy’s offense:
  • Remember, there is more to football than timed speed:
  • Measurables are great. Eye-popping Combine numbers are wonderful. But there are things that game film can tell us that good numbers in workout drills don’t. It wasn’t all that long ago when Jeremy Langford impressed with strong showings in the 40 and in other workout drills, but the Combine numbers and in-game speed didn’t quite show up at the same time. And that’s why the Bears ultimately moved on from a running back they once believed had potential to take over for Matt Forte. So while we can’t ignore those numbers, we should know better than to think they’re the be-all, end-all.
  • I think Mitch Trubisky likes his new teammate:
  • Every path to the NFL is different and unique:

  • The Bears brought in waves upon waves of undrafted free agents into the weekend’s rookie mini-camp, and one who could stand out above the rest is a player who some figured would get drafted in the late rounds. Utah State product Dax Raymond has a shot to crack this roster and I’m looking forward to seeing him at training camp. The tight ends group is always a fun watch at Bourbonnais because of the variety in drills they do. Between practicing blocking, route-running, and pass-catching, tight ends have a lot on their plate and it’s not an easy position to learn at the pro level. But because the Bears have just three tight ends returning from last year’s roster, strong performances in the spring and summer for Raymond could get him onto the 53-man roster. Of course, there is a long way before we get to that point.
  • Everyone has something that motivates them:

  • One of the things I like about Mike Davis as a fit is potential is that he figures to get more touches than he did in Seattle or San Francisco, but he doesn’t need to be a volume-carry player to provide a positive impact on the offense. Role players who know their fit and can excel in short bursts are likely to thrive in Matt Nagy’s offense.
  • A quick dive inside some numbers: Davis has averaged 4.8 yards per touch in the last two seasons, while Jordan Howard averaged 4.1 yards. Howard played more games (32) than Davis (21) over the last two years, and Davis will need to be healthy to make the most of his potential. I can’t wait to see how he is used in the backfield with David Montgomery, Tarik Cohen, and others.
  • Clear some time today to read up on the Bears’ longest-tenured scout:
  • Amazon devices are all on a big sale for Mother’s Day, which allows me to remind you that Mother’s Day is coming and you should do something nice for her. No excuses.
