Cubs Minor League Daily: Lake Arrives

iowa field of dreamsThis edition of the Daily will be a little shorter than usual. The Draft (and the post-Draft articles) take up a fair bit of time, and I do need to sleep at some point. My thoughts on Day One of the Draft  will be coming in a separate article later today. In the meantime we have some minor league baseball to review.

Almost lost in all that draft excitement was the Triple A and 2013 debut of Junior Lake. He played third base, batted sixth, and went 1 for 4 on an infield single. An inauspicious start, perhaps, but the important thing is that he is playing.

Scores From Yesterday

Iowa – The Cubs managed just four hits in this 6-0 loss.
Tennessee – Tennessee dropped both ends of a doubleheader. Game One ended in a 5-0 loss for Tennessee, and despite eight hits the Smokies lost Game Two 2-1.
Daytona – The Daytona doubleheader was rained out.
Kane County – And in yet another shutout, the Cougars lost 9-0.

Performances of Note

  • [Iowa] Logan Watkins, Donnie Murphy, and Steve Clevenger all doubled for the Cubs. That was just about the extent of the offense.
  • [Iowa] Not a lot to report on the mound, either. Guillermo Moscoso would have had a nice start had it not been for the 5 walks. Michael Bowden struck out 4 in 1.2 innings… but allowed three runs on four hits.
  • [Tennessee] Doubles from Matt Szczur and Chad Noble were the offensive highlights of Game One for the Smokies.
  • [Tennessee] Game Two saw two hit games from Rafael Lopez and Ronald Torreyes. Torreyes included his 11th double as part of his day.
  • [Tennessee] Eric Jokisch pitched a nice game. He struck out 6 over 7 innings while giving up 2 runs on 2 walks and 4 hits.
  • [Tennessee] Trey McNutt and Zach Rosscup both pitched a scoreless frame in Game One.
  • [Kane County] Jeimer Candelario was the only Cougar who could get his bat going. He finished 2 for 4. A double by Marco Hernandez was the only extra base hit.
  • Other News

  • Three walks against four strikeouts for the Smokies in Game One. That’s not quite the 1:1 or better ratio I love to see, but it is close.
  • There are some nice picture to pass along this morning. First up is this great shot of Anthony Giansanti tweeted last night by Giansanti himself.
  • Baseball photographer Dylan Heuer was in attendance at the Iowa Cubs game last night, and he was kind enough to post some of his work to his website. One thing we can tell for sure from looking at those picture – Junior Lake is really, really tall.
  • And Logan Watkins likes to run the bases with eyes closed. And players make funny faces when turning double plays. Ok, that’s three things.
