I'm quite impressed with how jarring it is, if it wasn't for commercials I'd be tense for hours afterwards... And that's what a horror flick/show should be.
So I watched the pilot of American Horror Story. There was a lot to like and be intrigued about, but it was really jarring. And not just in the intentional way that a horror flick is jarring. I can't say that I enjoyed it, but I can't say I didn't like it. But, by the end, I felt like I'd survived it. It's not really a great feeling when you're just trying to enjoy a show. Not sure I'll be able to stick it out over the long haul if it remains so ... jarring.
I agree that it was as unnerving as it was intriguing. At first I thought I might turn it off from disappointment, not living up to the expectations I had from the commercials. By the end, though, I was ready to watch the next episode. I'm particularly interested in finding out more about the neighbors. Hopefully it doesn't disappoint.
