From that list (scroll down), who are appropriate targets? What say you, Bleacher Nation?

I like Brandon McCarthy if they can get him on a good enough deal, and he seems like an Epstein/Hoyer type of guy right now. With no real top of the rotation starters outside of Grienke, I think the Cubs would be best served by picking up two lesser quality guys with some bounceback potential or upside. Guys like Francisco Liriano, Anibal Sanchez, and Edwin Jackson are going to cost a lot, so they should concentrate on guys like Jeremy Guthrie, Joe Blanton, Aaron Cook, and Colby Lewis. If anyone is looking for a huge splash here, I think they are going to come away disappointed.

Agreed fully. The name that scared me was Sanchez, because if I'm not mistaken, he's an old Theo guy from his days in Boston, right? Maybe part of the Hanley Ramirez deal?

Anyway, I think with so little payroll and so little starting pitching I just thought it'd be interesting to see what they maybe thinking. I'd suspect McCarthy is going to get paid, too.

My top five picks:

1. Dan Haren (assuming the Angels don't pick up his $15.5 option)
2. Shaun Marcum
3. Brandon McCarthy
4. Joe Saunders
5. Anibal Sanchez

I think they should attempt Blanton, Cook, Guthrie, Haren, Jackson, McCarthy, and one of the Sanchez dudes. All should be for a year, possibly 2, except for MAYBE Haren.

We are fine on relievers. Unfortunately they happen to be starting right now.

I want two low-cost inning eaters in the mold of Joe Blanton and a possible high upside injury risk like McCarthy

Brandon McCarthy does make some sense as a potential target. Same with Blanton, as much as I'd be indifferent to that one.

Maybe Sanchez keeps playing poorly for DET and we can buy low on him? (Doubtful, right?)

I'd almost lay money there's less than zero chance of that happening.
