The Bears Might Have to Trade For Their Next Kicker and Other Bullets

My time in Minneapolis has yielded the best and worst of what the weather can be like, which is impressive considering I was here for 48 hours or so. It simply boggled my mind that I sat through the rain in a baseball stadium that does not have a retractable roof, especially when the football stadium down the road is enclosed. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  • As we continue to monitor the Bears’ kicking situation, we will also keep tabs on what is going on around the league. One team to watch is the Jets, who NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport tweets has signed former AAF kicker Taylor Bertolet after Chandler Catanzaro retired. The movement in Jets camp is worth keeping up with because they have been mentioned as a possible suitor for Ravens backup kicker Kaare Vedvik, who has also been on the Bears’ radar.
  • The Jets reportedly believe the Bears will eventually trade for Vedvik. But as WGN Radio’s Adam Hoge points out, the Jets have a higher waiver priority than the Bears. So if both the Bears and Jets wait out the Vedvik situation, the Jets will have the first shot to claim him on waivers when Baltimore lets him go. Or to put it another way, if the Bears *REALLY* want Vedvik, they will need to trade for him.
  • Trading for a kicker (again) will not be easy to stomach, but watching an unstable kicking game won’t be easy either. Then again, the Ravens have a knack for finding and developing kicking talent. Wil Lutz (87.0%), Stephen Hauschka (86.4%), and Graham Gano (85.5% with Panthers) all started their careers in Baltimore, which makes that pipeline appear to be worth tapping into when it comes to the Bears’ search for a kicker.
  • Perhaps the Bears like Elliott Fry enough to not try and pry Vedvik away from the Ravens before the Jets (or any other team with a kicking problem) could. Fry passed the Cody Parkey test on Thursday, but Vedvik might have some more upside to go along with the tutelage of a darn good special teams coaching staff. Perhaps the Bears would make a trade like one they made with the Raiders to get Eddy Piñeiro, which sent a late-round pick to the Raiders that would come to life if Piñeiro was rostered for five games. But if that is the baseline for a trade, then the Bears might need to make it easier for that conditional selection to vest. Heck, Baltimore might ask for a draft pick with no conditions.
  • Whomever the Bears’ kicker happens to be in 2019, here’s to kicking more PATs rather than settling for field goals.
  • Dropping dimes between two All-Pro defensive backs is nothing to sneeze at:
  • Trubisky’s challenges while practicing against a first-team defense loaded with Pro Bowlers and All-Pros have been noted, but I suppose this is what it looks like when iron sharpens iron all summer. The feeling is that Trubisky will be protected in preseason and his throws will be limited. HOWEVER, I will feel good about the Bears’ chances moving forward if those are the types of throws he can unleash when games of consequence begin.

  • David Montgomery is going to be special, isn’t he?
  • Montgomery owns the Pro Football Focus collegiate record for most missed tackles forced in a season (109 in 2017) and his showing in 2018 (102 missed tackles forced) were the second most in the analytical site’s history. I’d love to see more of what we saw on Thursday in the upcoming preseason games, but the Bears should probably save him for Week 1.
  • Sorry, Coach Nagy. It’s far too late to be pumping the brakes:
  • All gas, no brakes on the David Montgomery hype train. CHOO CHOO!
  • This pint-sized Packers fan is beefing with his whole Little League squad:
  • A hearty crowd showed up to the Bears’ last training camp practice:
  • Oakley sunglasses are among the Deals of the Day at Amazon today, so check it out.
  • I got some love from a Chicago transplant now working in Minnesota while I was wearing an Obvious Shirt, so this deserves a bump:
  • Well, this isn’t a great sign:
