Jeff Samardzija was in and out of trouble all game, mostly by his own doing (the good and the bad, I mean). Ultimately, he pitched well enough to keep the Cubs in the game, but you can’t win if your team doesn’t score. The Cubs lost out on one scoring opportunity late when Samardzija batted for himself to lead off the sixth, despite leaving the next half inning – it turns out that would-have-been pinch hitter Luis Valbuena is now out with an oblique strain. Otherwise, it was double-plays aplenty, ending the Cubs’ rallies.
Also: soft-tossing lefty, FTW.
