Ahh, now that we have finally gotten official confirmation on Theo, thus insuring a 25 year Dynasty, we can get back to everyday Cubdom, and our lives. In fact, I hope I still have my job on Monday because I haven't been there since the Theo news first broke. I need to finish up my crype team here, as I always like to finish what I start.(unless it is a fight with a bigger guy than me)
So here is today's entry:
P- Drew Hall 1984 1st Round 3rd pick overall
The summer of 1984. Probably one of my favorite summers of all-time. Not only were the Cubs dominating the National League, but this was the summer of cinematic classics like The Karate Kid, Ghostbusters, Bachelor Party, and many more. These were films I would go on to base my life's teaching and work on. For example "you do Karate 'guess so?' get squashed, just like grape!" or "One to one problem yes, five to one problem too much to ask of anyone".
As the Cubs were conducting their June draft they made a very bad pick in Mr. Drew Hall. A lefthanded 'flame-thrower', he ended up winning 5 games in his big league career with a 5 plus ERA. Mark McGwire was picked 4 spots later, but I don't fault the Cubs for not taking him. McGwire would not have gotten the steroids he recieved in Oakland from the Cubs, because as with every new trend in baseball, the Cubs were late to the party on steroids. It wasn't until the early 90's that the Cubs caught up to the rest of the league on 'supplements'. (I am looking at you Mr. 37 homeruns out of nowhere never to be done again Catcher Rick Wilkens!)
This was the Dallas Green era though, so the Cubs did well in the second round picking a high school pitcher from Las Vegas named Greg Maddux. They also added Jamie Moyer a couple of rounds later. Mr. Green knew what he was doing, he may have been a victim of the ahead of schedule success that was 1984.
But even the best of them make bad picks, and Drew Hall was a bad one. He know gets immortalized on my crype team.
Now I will take a nap....dreaming of 1984
ahhh...Ryno, Dernier, the Sarge, the Red Baron, Jody!, Jody! and Elizabeth Shue wearing that blue sweater when Daniel took her mini-golfing...or actually when Mrs. LaRusso drove them in that crappy station wagon...
