So, after last night, it seems everyone is depressed/pissed/disappointed that the Cubs didn't get Anibal Sanchez to sign. I offer this link, to maybe take away some of the sting. I've been watching Sanchez since he was traded to the Marlins, and the guy is always hurt. He's a ticking time bomb, and despite everyone's disappointment, I think the Cubs dodged a major bullet on this one. I'd be far more impressed if the Cubs got Edwin Jackson to sign a 5 yr/60-65 million dollar deal, and far less worried about his health.

I have a feeling, and maybe it's the cubbie in me, but some how this turns into the Cub's favor. Sometimes it's the non moves / non signs that work out better than the actual trade or FA signing. Maybe we end up with Porcello and Castellanos because of this or Olt etc or another piece that works out better for the Cubs long term. Bottom line if Sanchez wanted to play for us he would be. It's on him, his choice, and he has earned that right even if he is going to regret at some point in the future.

Half of this game, for me, is reading their collective (including the SABROBOT's) mind. Why was this SP a good bet right now at one (group of) number(s), but not at the next? What was the calculation in dollars? time? talent?

The Anibal Sanchez (and other) deal(s) may also be influenced by old school stuff; friendships, building new or honoring old contacts, GRUDGES, etc. But, the math is without passion. Until they say 'play ball' our analyses here are best when they discern the math part.

That's not to demean CubFanBob's "feeling" about this working out. That feeling has two or three significances for us fans:
1) rooting faithfully is what we do
2) thinkers from Ralph Waldo Emerson in "Self-Reliance" to Malcolm Gladwell in "Blink" teach to trust our guts, our intuition. Don't underestimate your power.
3) faith moves mountains (Don't underestimate your power.)

In December I say two OR three.

I think you're right, FFP...about the computer thing, I mean.

I like that our FO doesn't allow themselves to be used and abused by an agent to run the price up for their clients. It looks like the Cubs have a price in mind, make the offer, and if you want to haggle it over, go for it, but the Cubs aren't going to get in a bidding war for you. This is a refreshing change from the past FO and can only help us in the long run. And I don't mind to imply that they offer one price all the time and be done, but in this case especially, it sure seems like the agent was using them and the Cubs weren't willing to play along.

As usual from me - pure speculation based on other people's insights. I do not have an original thought in my brain and I am ok admitting that. I am a lemming.

Jim Hendry would have handed him a 6 year 100 mil contract and he would have been a subpar pitcher with an albatross contract the last two years of his deal

The cubs are more than a starter away from competing.

I'm glad Sanchez used them like a fiddle.

We already have 2 or 3 number two starters. Why pay $75 million for another?

Stick to the game plan and stock pile prospects.

Id like to see them sign liriano for a year.
