In his autobiography, "Veeck as in Wreck", Veeck wrote about planting bittersweet. He told Mr. Wrigley earlier that he was planting ivy on the walls. Supposedly, at some point, Wrigley called Veeck saying he was bringing some people in town to see the game and look at the ivy. Veeck hadn't even started, so he planted bittersweet on the wall instead after he found out it could be planted overnight and ivy couldn't. He put the ivy in later.
