Cubs Fact:

Second baseman Glenn Beckert of the Cubs was nicknamed "Bruno" after wrestler Bruno Sammartino, because he often overran other fielders while chasing pop flies.

I never heard of the wrestler, but I don't see a connection there.

I never heard him refered to by that nickname, and I'm guessing that wrestler was a little before my time.

He was an announcer in the '80's when I started watching. He was pretty old and I recall Randy "Macho Man" Savage added to his villainy by "beating up" the poor old man at some point during his feud with Ricky the Dragon Steamboat.

He was a really successful WWWF champion (later WWF and now WWE) back in the 1970s but he hates Vince McMahon for ruining wrestling and when he was an announcer, he would refuse to ride with current wrestlers because he was paranoid of them carrying drugs/steroids.
