Im surprised that not a single person has mentioned Black Sabbath(Paranoid), AC/DC(High Voltage), Mötorhead (All the Aces), Ozzy(Blizzard of Ozz), the Ramones (Road to Ruin), or Jimi Hendrix (Axis Bold as Love).

I thought Blizzard of Ozz was a great album. I played the hell out of that one.

It is isn't it. I listened to that album so much I could probably sing every song on it (not very well though)

I'm definitely in for Axis.

Yea, I love this album. I have a radio show once a week, and I try to play at least one song from this album every show.

Uncle Tupelo - Anodyne

All four of Uncle Tupelo's albums were excellent. My favorite is March, but they are all outstanding.

Man...you guys must be young....

I would have to say there would be three Beatle albums in mine....Abbey Road, Revolver, and Sgt. Pepper.....

My Led Zepplin album would be Physical Graffiti

Let it Bleed...Stones

With Sympathy for the Devil being the greatest Rock song

I am old...

I agree with the Zep and Stones choices - those are indeed their best albums (and except for the overrated Sgt Pepper you're correct regarding the Beatles).
And yeah those guys are too young to argue with.

Everybody is so quick to dump on Sgt. Pepper. But it's such a great album.
There isn't a single song on that album that I don't like, and to me thats what
makes it such a great album. You can't go wrong with any of the songs on that
album either
01 - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
02 - With A Little Help From My Friends
03 - Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds
04 - Getting Better
05 - Fixing A Hole
06 - She's Leaving Home
07 - Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite!
08 - Within You Without You
09 - When I'm Sixty-Four
10 - Lovely Rita
11 - Good Morning Good Morning
12 - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (Reprise)
13 - A Day In The Life

I dunno - it is of course a matter of opinion but I find the song writing weak (it's still better than almost any other band's finest effort).
I find Lucy in the Sky is just way too boring to listen to for the past 30 years (this of course may change change for me some day - such is the nature of music).
Fixing a Hole and Getting Better just go on too long and aren't as good as similar songs on Rubber Soul.
She's Leaving Home - I love Paul and don't mind his sentimentality but this is a snoozer.
Within Without You - no thanks - George has written AMAZING songs - this is pretty much just noodling.

Granted this has songs of genius and arguably one the most important rock songs ever written (A Day in the Life).
The true star of this album is the production thanks to George Martin, Geoff Emerick, and the boys in the band who had the vision.

I was considering a Ramones album for my list but Road to Ruin would not be the one.
More likely the first or Rocket to Russia (although Leave Home is up there too).

Ok.
I've decided to list 5 PERFECT rock albums (does the "top"mean favorite or best or most important or influential?).

So here are 5 perfect albums.

1) Television - Marquee Moon

2) Queen - A Night at the Opera

3) The Who - Live at Leeds (the more recent "complete show")

4) Gang of Four - Entertainment!

5) The Kinks - The Kinks are the Village Green Preservation Society

6) The Clash - London Calling

7) Electric Light Orchestra - Out of the Blue

8) Wire - Pink Flag

9) Boston - Boston

10) David Bowie - Ziggy Stardust

11) Slayer - Reign in Blood

Did I say 5?
Anyway there you have it.
11 PERFECT albums.

long time follower first time poster:

no particular order:

The Replacements - Let it Be

The Kinks - Arthur or the Decline and Fall of the British Empire

Excellent choices but I always felt Arthur a bit overrated (but just a bit).

Being the arbiter of all things ROCK I must take a moment to mull and point out where everyone is WRONG.

But in the meantime -

Ace, you're funny!
Blake from Jets To Brazil is one of my oldest friends (his old gf was the original bass player in my current band), my old band opened for Radiohead in Rotterdam years ago (they're nice guys), and thank god I have no connection to Smashing Pumpkins....

Ian! Dude! You must tell Blake that the nerdy proprietor of a Chicago Cubs' site you frequent is a HUGE fan. Everyone here is talking about perfect albums with no songs to skip - there isn't a single JTB song worth skipping on any of their three records. I'm having a bit of vicarious star-struck-ness right now.

I don't think Blake is much of a sports fan (let alone baseball or the Cubs) - you see, he's a bit of a nerd himself only in the other direction ("I hate sports").
Do know about his previous band, Jawbreaker, which was made up of close friends of mine and who, in my opinion, ripped my band (at the time) off!
I'm serious, but also protesting a bit in jest - there was a lot of "hey man you stole that riff from ME!!!" in those days.
Fun!
And good guys.

I have vague high school memories of seeing Jawbreaker at ... Metro? Double Door? Thirsty Whale?

5) The Kinks - The Kinks are the Village Preservation Society

I love this album, but when they released the album in the US/UK they pulled off "Days" and replaced it with "Monica", which is completely inexcusable. "Monica" is a pretty lame song, and for me it drops this album just a shade below perfect. A bit better than Arthur, a bit worse than Muswell.
