The Chicago Bears need a long-term answer at quarterback (yeah, what else is new?), and Mike Glennon is probably not going to be that guy.
As far as short-term answers, you can do a lot worse, but I don’t think there many analysts out there suggesting that Glennon will be much more than that.
The NFL Draft is coming up in less than a couple weeks now, and in many other years, the Bears’ third overall pick would be an organizational and positional life-saver. The obvious answer would be to draft the top rated quarterback on the board, shove him into the huddle and hope for the best.
Of course, as we know, this draft hasn’t really provided that option. While there is certainly a top tier (roughly 3-5 QBs, depending on your preferences), none have really stood out among the rest. In fact, while some mocks have one or more of these guys going at the very top of the draft, others aren’t even sure if any will be taken in the first round at all.
It’s an unfortunate coincidence, given the Bears draft position, but they’re still doing their due diligence. In fact, with some players, they’re doing it twice.
Patrick Finley of the Chicago Sun-Times reports that the Bears received a bonus look at Notre Dame product DeShone Kizer on Thursday.
One of the five best quarterback prospects in the draft, Kizer performed at the Bears’ local pro day at what Finley believes might have been Kizer’s third meeting with the team. And because of NFL rules, Kizer doesn’t count against the team’s limit of 30 prospect visits – a new rule allows teams to expand on the term “local,” adding three colleges outside the immediate area for the workout (those teams were Illinois, Northern Illinois, and Notre Dame).
Kizer has been connected to the Bears in the past, but his pro-day resulted in some mixed reviews and his former head coach, Notre Dame’s Brian Kelly, recently added that he’s not quite NFL-ready yet (although, query whether he just wanted his quarterback to return for his senior season). Even still the need is obvious, and the Bears have clearly been putting in the time. Who knows, maybe they’ll wind up with a quarterback in the first round after all – or one they like slipping to the second round.
