Latest Mocks: Creative Trades, ‘99% Sure’ Bears Take DB at No. 3, Dream Scenarios, More

Several mock drafts have the Chicago Bears getting creative in their search for a long-term solution at quarterback, though not necessarily in the first round, as other pundits have started to speculate.

Let’s jump right in …

  • Over at CBS Sports, R.J. White’s three-round mock draft features seven quarterbacks taken in the first three rounds. The Bears make some noise in White’s mock draft, trading their second-round selection to the Atlanta Falcons to move into the first round to draft Notre Dame quarterback DeShone Kizer with the 31st overall pick. It’s a move that makes sense because the Falcons have only six picks in the draft and the Bears could see this as an opportunity to leapfrog a team like the Browns or 49ers, who could pick a quarterback ahead of them in the second round. (And the Bears were connected again to Kizer earlier today.)
  • The Bears’ third-round selection in this mock draft is an intriguing on,e as White has the Bears selecting Ohio State running back/wide receiver Curtis Samuel, who could be an impact player in several facets of the offense, as well as special teams. As for that ever-important first-round pick, White has the Bears choosing LSU safety Jamal Adams third overall … as do USA Today’s Nate Davis, and Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox.
  • Pro Football Weekly’s Kevin Fishbain pieced together a seven-round mock draft, in which the Bears pick a quarterback in the second round. Fishbain has Alabama defensive lineman Jonathan Allen going to the Bears with their first round pick, but the fun begins in the second round. That is where the Bears pull off a trade where they deal their third-round pick and a fourth-rounder to get back into the Raiders’ second-round pick (56th overall) to draft Pittsburgh quarterback Nathan Peterman. The Bears got a close look at Peterman at the Senior Bowl and he performed admirably. If it turns out that he made a good impression on the Bears’ coaching staff, he would make for the kind of player to move up in the draft and get.
  • Fishbain’s other Bears picks in this seven-round exercise include NC State safety Josh Jones in the second round (36th overall), an offensive tackle in the fourth (117th overall), a cornerback in the fifth (147th overall), and a wide receiver in the seventh (220th overall). Take a look for the full details.
  • Matt Miller’s latest Scouting Notebook over at Bleacher Report is filled with insight and a two-round mock draft. Among the tidbits is a source sharing that they are “99 percent sure” the Bears would choose one of the many talented defensive backs available in this draft if the team held on to the third overall pick. Miller’s two-round mock has five quarterbacks going in the first two rounds, but none to the Bears, as they commit to improving the secondary. It starts with the Bears taking Marshon Lattimore third, then further solidifying the secondary by picking Washington safety Budda Baker with the 36th selection. This is a draft deep in secondary personnel, but getting two of the best prospects at their respective positions helps the Bears set things up nicely for defensive coordinator Vic Fangio.
  • What is your dream scenario for the Bears on draft day? Other than one of the unheralded quarterback prospects turning into Tom Brady and leading the franchise to unmatched Super Bowl glory, that is. Michael Renner of Pro Football Focus has a dream mock with the best-case scenario for each first-round pick. Unfortunately the Bears’ dream mock doesn’t feature top prospect Myles Garrett, who is listed as the dream scenario for both the Browns and 49ers. Frankly, there isn’t a team that wouldn’t dream on the idea of Garrett slipping to them. As for the Bears, their best case scenario to Renner features Ohio State cornerback Marshon Lattimore as the third overall pick.
  • FOX Sports’ Dieter Kurtenbach also has the Bears choosing Lattimore with the third overall pick in his updated four-round mock draft. Kurtenbach has the Bears doubling down in the defensive secondary, picking Connecticut safety Obi Melifonwu in the second round, and selecting another defensive player (Larry Ogunjobi, a defensive tackle from Charlotte) in the third round. The Bears finally address offense in the fourth round with two selections in Kurtenbach’s mock, selecting Tennessee quarterback Joshua Dobbs with the 111th overall choice and Western Kentucky receiver Taywan Taylor with pick No. 117.
  • Chad Reuter checks in with a six-round mock draft that sends the Bears some interesting prospects and projects. Reuter sees the first quarterback going off the board with the first pick as the Cleveland Browns pull a stunner and draft North Carolina’s Mitch Trubisky, allowing defensive end Myles Garrett to fall into the 49ers’ laps with the second pick. That leaves the Bears choosing Stanford defensive end Solomon Thomas, who Reuter sees teaming with 2016 first-round pick Leonard Floyd to rush the passer. Later picks have the Bears adding to the offense with Ole Miss tight end Evan Engram (second round), Florida State tackle Roderick Johnson (fourth) and Texas A&M receiver Josh Reynolds (fourth). The team also adds defense in the form of Houston outside linebacker Tyus Bowser (third) and Middle Tennessee State cornerback Jeremy Cutrer (fifth). As a reminder, the Bears currently do not have a sixth-round pick after trading it for tight end Khari Lee, who caught one pass for seven yards in his seven starts (16 appearances) for the Bears in 2015. Lee played eight games for the Detroit Lions in 2016.
