Cubs Minor League Daily: Go To Iowa

iowa field of dreamsKris Bryant is going to Iowa.
Arodys Vizcaino is going to Iowa.
Armando Rivero is going to Iowa.
I am going to Iowa.
You should go to Iowa.

If you are able to go see the Triple A Cubs, now featuring both Baez and Bryant, the most powerful pair of sluggers to a share a team in the minors today, then this is the time to go. Even if you can’t come out on Friday or Saturday, make a point to get to Iowa. You may never see two hitters of this caliber on the same team with tickets this affordable ever again. Times like this is when minor league tickets really become a fantastic value.

As for plans for this weekend’s games: I aim to be in the stadium both Friday and Saturday not long after the gates open. After the game Friday, if the weather holds up, I’ll probably head over to El Bait Shop for awhile; feel free to drop by and say hi (I’ll be the short bearded guy in a black Bleacher Nation shirt – assuming I haven’t melted by then).  Or hunt me down in the stadium before or during either of the games.  I’m pretty much always happy to talk with fellow minor league fans.

I’ve already heard from a number of readers who are coming out to the games this weekend, and that’s awesome. I wish you could all make it. Minor league games are a great experience anyway, but when you factor in a chance to see players like Baez AND Bryant at close range it gets very hard to pass up.

Go to Iowa, folks. There are two 70+ power hitters who featured in the top ten of most national prospect lists in that lineup. Assuming these guys stay healthy you will have this opportunity for the next few months, maybe for a few weeks next year, and that could be it. This really is a rare chance. Don’t miss it.

Scores From Yesterday

Iowa – The Cubs held off a late inning El Paso rally for a 3-1 win.
Tennessee – The Smokies had the day off.
Daytona – Daytona scored nine times in the first two innings and ran away for an 11-2 win.
Kane County – Kane County was off on Wednesday.
Boise Hawks – Boise drops one on the road, 5-2.

Performances of Note

  • [Iowa] Dallas Beeler struck out 6 over 6 scoreless innings, walked a pair, and gave up just 3 hits.
  • [Iowa] Catcher Rafael Lopez finished 2 for 4. Josh Vitters finished 3 for 4 and hit his 7th homer.
  • [Iowa] Arismendy Alcantara singled, walked twice, and stole 2 bases to give him 14 on the season.
  • [Daytona] Rock Shoulders had just one hit, but it was a big one. His third homer of the season was a first inning grand slam.
  • [Daytona] And Gioskar Amaya chased that homer with a first inning blast of his own; it was his second of the season. Amaya also doubled and finished with 3 hits.
  • [Daytona] Pin-Chieh Chen tripled and finished with 3 hits. He now has 6 triples this year.
  • [Daytona] Dan Vogelbach doubled, walked, and finished 2 for 4. Albert Almora walked and singled to finish 1 for 4.
  • [Boise] Not much offense for the Hawks last night. Justin Marra‘s double and David Bote‘s first homer were the highlights.
  • [Boise] Trey Masek struck out 4 and walked 3 in his 2 innings of relief.
  • Other News

  • Kris Bryant as an outfielder? We know it is a possibility, and it sounds like he would be open to making the shift if the Cubs asked it of him.
  • Some headline making minor league roster moves have been announced, but I don’t think we’re finished with the shuffling. There will be other moves triggered by those moves, not to mention a few independent moves, and many of them we may not hear about until the transactions are processed by the respective leagues. It could take a day or two for things to shake out completely.
