So what's the story with this cat? Kid looks like the Cubs have used him almost exclusively as a reliever and brought him along slow, despite his K/9 of 11.8 and his career minor league era of 2.69.

Any idea what's holding the Cubs from moving him along?

Great questions, and I don't have the answers - hoping someone does. He has been slowly promoted through the system (which is rare for good Cubs prospects under the Hendry regime), despite great peripherals. I do see that the Cubs finally gave up on him as a starter in 2009, so maybe there was an adjustment period that didn't show up in the numbers?

In any event, it seems like he's ready to take a crack at the bullpen in 2011 - if he's still on the Cubs, that is.

Would love to hear additional thoughts on Beliveau.

Only reason I ask is I see he just got invited to the, hitting heavy, AFL. He's only had 1 outing where he threw a scoreless inning.

Yeah, he was going to be on the "taxi squad" from the get-go (limited outings), but he was pulled onto Team USA for the Pan Am games. As you note, he only recently got to the AFL, and I would expect his outings to be limited.

If he doesn't go to the Red Sox, I think he could be in the bullpen next year, but with Marshall and Russell being there, I'm not sure there will be a spot for him unless someone else is moved.

Looks like both he and Jackson did quite well.

If Samardzija and Cashner are both in the rotation, that would help his cause. Ditto if Woody retires.

I wonder how the new manager would feel about 3 lefties in the pen? Marshall isn't really treated as a LOOGY, so really it would be 2.
