Cubs Minor League Daily: Minor Panic

tennessee smokiesWith six teams to follow on any given night and prospects worth monitoring at every level of the system, it should come as no surprise that I can’t watch every game. And, given that I work full time outside of Bleacher Nation, some nights I can’t watch any games. So, when I settle in to catch up on the games and prepare to write the Daily, I occasionally undergo mild bouts of concern.

And sometimes extreme jolts of stark terror.

Last night was one such night. Scanning down the Tennessee box score the thought process went something like this: “Ha homered, nice, two hits for Soler, no strikeouts, good, three hits for Mota, where was he playing this time, both corner OF, but that means… crap. Soler left early. Not again…”

And feeling slightly ill, I dove into the ultimate source of minor league knowledge: Twitter. The official Smokies feed turned up nothing. The Smokies Radio feed turned up nothing. A search for “Jorge Soler“, though turned up this beautiful gem of a Tweet:

And suddenly I felt much better. It wasn’t another injury. Soler was fine. It was planned. Life is good.

Scores From Yesterday

Iowa – Iowa never overcame an early deficit in this 5-4 loss.
Tennessee – A ninth inning rally came up short in this 4-3 loss.
Daytona – Daytona took the early lead and never trailed in this 9-6 win.
Kane County – Kane County’s offense was quiet in this 3-1 loss.
Boise Hawks – Boise again found just enough for the win in this 7-6 final.
Arizona – Arizona had the day off.

Performances of Note

  • [Iowa] Kris Bryant and Javier Baez both finished 1 for 4 in this one. and the lone hit for both was a single. Baez’s – a fluky pop-up that dropped – extended his hitting streak to 15 games.
  • [Iowa] Lars Anderson hit his 3rd homer of the season in this one. The lefty first baseman has quietly raised his line to .278/.363/.418 in limited time this season.
  • [Iowa] Dan Straily started this one, and on the good side he struck out 7 over 6 innings. On the bad side he allowed 2 walks and 2 homers on his way to giving up 4 runs on 7 hits.
  • [Tennessee] Jorge Soler finished 2 for 3 with no walks and no strikeouts in this one.
  • [Tennessee] Jae-Hoon Ha hit his 2nd home run, in the ninth inning no less, and finished 1 for 5.
  • [Daytona] Rock Shoulders homered again, his 9th, and finished 2 for 2 with 2 walks.
  • [Daytona] Jordan Hankins hit his 2nd homer as he finished 1 for 3 with a walk.
  • [Daytona] Billy McKinney doubled and struck out in his 5 at bats.
  • [Daytona] Michael Jensen struck out 5 in his 2.2 innings of one hit ball. Starling Peralta fanned 3 more in his 2 innings of allowing just the one hit.
  • [Kane County] Jeimer Candelario homered for the 5th time as a Cougar this season.
  • [Kane County] Daury Torrez gave up 3 runs on 6 hits over 5 innings while striking out 4.
  • [Kane County] Pitching in relief, Zak Hermans struck out 3 in 2 perfect frames.
  • [Boise] The Hawks managed to score their 7 runs in this game despite only having 4 hits.
  • [Boise] Justin Marra homered for the 5th time this season.
  • [Boise] Jeffrey Baez and Rashad Crawford both reached base once, and both stole a base in this one. It was number 15 for Baez, and number 9 for Crawford.
  • Other News

  • Watching Christian Villanueva play defense never gets old. Don’t believe me? Watch this clip. Ponder all the separate points of awesomeness in that clip: the timing of the steps, the ultra low grab, the balance, the smooth transfer, the fade away throw, the lightning quick release, the perfect strike to first. If you aren’t smiling after watching that play (over and over and over again), then you probably need another cup of coffee.
