After Fujikawa blew the game today, somebody in the Gameday thread queried whether the Cubs have the worst 9th inning pitching in baseball over the last two seasons. My first reaction was, "I know they're bad surely somebody's worse." Turns out I'm overly optimistic.

Here are some assorted stats of how Cubs relievers have performed in high leverage situations (according to Fangraphs) for the 2012 and early 2013 season:

Save conversion % - 57.4 (tied for last)
ERA - 13.06 (dead last)
BAA - .280 (dead last)
OBP - .395 (dead last)
SLG - .490 (dead last)
BB% - 13 (dead last)
% Batters HBP - 1.7 (dead last)

I think I'm going to stop now. My heart hurts.

God, I didn't realize that it was that bad. I have no idea where the answer will be coming from, FA or homegrown. Don't we have a couple guys coming up from the minors soon that are late inning guys?

Best solution is to stop with this "closer" stuff and just play matchups. If you do that in the 7th inning with bases loaded and a one run game why wouldnt you in the 9th? Just makes no sense to me

We might have to convert Rondon into a closer... 1 hit so far, after 15 total batters faced.

They tried that with Dolis last year and i think it set him back developmentally. Just keep him where he is at till he earns it.

The reason Rafael Dolis was ineffective was because he had no control over any of his pitches.

Kevin Gregg?

Actually Russell may be our best bet, he's entering his prime years and was actually more effective vs. righties last season (though you could argue that he was pitching against weaker righties but it's worth giving it a shot)

Yes, we just signed to a minor league deal "for depth."

I should mention I was being sarcastic about Gregg.  Russell looks like the best bet.

I'm all for the closer by committee thing. There absolutely is not a single shut-down guy in this bull-pen, so why not just play the match-ups in the 9th inning like it's any other inning?

Welcome back, Kevin Gregg.  Yippee... :(
