Jacob Turner’s Season Reportedly Over and Other Bullets

jacob turner featureThe 2015 Trade Deadline Blogathon announcement is coming today. It’s for a very good cause, and should provide us a lot of fun over the next few weeks (not to mention the Blogathon, itself), so I really hope you’ll check it out and participate. (UPDATE: Here you go.)

  • If you were holding out hope for a Jacob Turner return even after he was shut down for a second time this year, you can stop hoping. Sahadev Sharma reports that the last shutdown – after Turner had reached, and was pitching well at, AA Tennessee – was followed by elbow surgery, including the insertion of a screw. The recovery time, according to Sharma, is four months, which means Turner’s season is over before it really began. It’s a tough luck lost year for the former top prospect, who only just turned 24 a couple months ago. He was getting some hype in Spring Training before he was shut down with an elbow issue – which turned into a shoulder issue, and apparently then turned back into an elbow issue. The Cubs have Turner under control heading into next year if they want to keep him, but that means using a precious 40-man roster spot all offseason on a gamble. Throw in the fact that Turner has no minor league options left – to keep him, the Cubs would have to put him on the 25-man roster to open the 2016 season – and his future with the Cubs is anything but clear. For now, Turner is already on the 60-day DL, so he will not require a 40-man roster spot until the end of the season.
  • The quiet hero in yesterday’s 2-0 win over the Marlins? No, it wasn’t Kyle Hendricks – he was the loud hero, because obviously – it was Chris Coghlan. His aggressive baserunning in the first inning (going first to third on a ball to left, then scoring on a wild pitch) yielded the Cubs’ first run, and a hit in the 8th with two outs drove in the Cubs’ second run.
  • Speaking of Hendricks, though, his FIP dropped yesterday to 3.41, 36th best in baseball, and one spot ahead of teammate Jon Lester (3.44). If you check the WAR list, the two are next two each other again, but flipped.
  • And speaking of Lester, he says he’s ready to pitch to Miguel Montero (Sun-Times), as he’ll have to do today with David Ross on the DL.
  • The Cardinals have placed Jaime Garcia on the disabled list (“home”) with a groin strain, which means they’ll have to make due on Tuesday with youngsters Tim Cooney and Tyler Lyons for the doubleheader against the Cubs. Doubleheaders are very hard to sweep, but the Cubs will be facing two young lefties that day with Jake Arrieta starting one half of the games. The Cubs will have a chance.
  • Oh, and if you’re going to be at the second game of the doubleheader on Tuesday night, or the game on Wednesday, I’ll be out in the right field bleachers for both. Stop by and watch some baseball with me. Sometimes I say funny or interesting things. Mostly I just shout “awww, come onnnnn!”
  • If you missed anything from a very busy weekend, including some trades and roster moves, catch up here.
