Latest Mocks and Draft Notes on NFL Draft Eve: Adams, Lattimore, and Thomas Tied to Bears

The 2017 NFL Draft kicks off in 24 hours, and Bears GM Ryan Pace is champing at the bit to get things underway. So are we.

But wait we must, and in the interim, a few items to tide you over …

  • Mock drafts at this stage in the game are slightly less a guessing game than they were a month ago, with pundits able to better incorporate public and sourced information into their selections. That is not necessarily to say these picks will be spot on when the actual draft plays out – no one is ever perfect – but they are typically slightly better informed. For example, Mike Maycock’s first and only mock draft is coming out today, and in it, he has the Bears selecting Ohio State corner back Marshon Lattimore after the 49ers take LSU safety Jamal Adams, and the Browns take Texas A&M defensive lineman Myles Garrett.
  • That’s the precise same order of the top three picks for Nate Davis’s latest mock draft, too. If his hamstrings check out as totally healthy, it’s hard to argue against landing a lockdown corner right now for the Bears.
  • Interestingly, Pace today indicated the Bears have their top three players in mind, and Brad Biggs recently suggested that the Bears are expecting to choose from between Lattimore, Adams, and Stanford defensive lineman Solomon Thomas (no one is realistically expecting Garrett to still be around). Lattimore has always made sense if the Bears opt to go for a corner, and the fit has similarly always been there with Adams. Some see Thomas having as much disruptive potential as any lineman in the draft, even if he’s been stung by the tweener label. If Jonathan Allen is out of consideration for the Bears, you have to wonder if the arthritic shoulders totally scared them off from risking such a high pick.
  • Dieter Kurtenbach’s final mock also has the Bears selecting Lattimore (albeit this time with Thomas going to the 49ers).
  • Adam Hoge shared a new mock draft, and he’s got the Bears going with Thomas after the Browns and 49ers take Garrett and Adams. (If the top two picks do play out that way, here’s hoping there’s still a chance for the Bears to pull off the trade down to 12 with the Browns so they can take Mitchell Tribuisky, and the Bears pick up two more second round picks for their trouble.) Later in the draft, Hoge has the Bears landing their developmental quarterback in the 4th round (Miami’s Brad Kaaya, which would be a nice get in the 4th), and has the Bears being the team to take OSU corner Gareon Conley in the 7th round (Conley has recently been linked to a rape allegation that he denies, taking him from the first round to out of the draft entirely for some teams). That would certainly be a controversial pick. You can read Hoge’s full piece for an explanation on that, and the rest of his picks.
  • SI’s mock has the Bears going for Adams after Garrett and Thomas are off the board. Generally speaking, we’re seeing the same group of names attached to the Bears, and it would not surprise me if the reason is that Adams, Lattimore, and Thomas really are the group from which the Bears are going to choose if they aren’t able to trade down.
  • Vegas has set the over/under on first round quarterbacks at 3.5, which seems like the precisely correct number, given that most expect Trubisky, Deshaun Watson, and Patrick Mahomes to go long before the first round is over. From there, DeShone Kizer and Davis Webb are probably your guys with a chance to pay out the “over.”
