Cubs Minor League Daily: Smokies Out

tennessee smokiesGetting swept in a double header on the road yesterday eliminated the Tennessee Smokies from playoff contention. A year that looked very promising when it began comes to a close after five months of fantastic offensive performances, high profile promotions, and a whole lot of pitching injuries.

That leaves the final tally of Cubs organization post-season teams at three: Daytona, Kane County, and Boise.

Scores From The Weekend

Iowa
Friday – Iowa walked off in the eleventh for a 5-4 win.
Saturday – The Cubs won with another shutout, 3-0.
Sunday – The win streak continued with this 11-8 final.

Tennessee
Friday – The weekend opened with a 6-5 win.
Saturday – A rain out on Saturday, though…
Sunday – … led to the Sunday doubleheader sweep. The Smokies lost the first game 9-0, and the second game 3-2.

Daytona
Friday – Daytona pulled away late for this 8-4 win.
Saturday – The Cubs never found their bats in this 3-1 loss.
Sunday – Daytona jumped to early lead and never looked back. They won 6-3.

Kane County
Friday – In a rain shortened game, the Cougars won 6-1.
Saturday – They scored in the ninth, but not enough. Kane County lost 4-2.
Sunday – Kane County earned their 91st win in this 9-2 final.

Boise Hawks
Friday – Boise opened the weekend with a 2-1 loss.
Saturday – Boise jumped to an early lead on the way to a playoff-clinching 9-8 win.
Sunday – This game went into ten innings and ended in a 4-3 Boise loss.

Arizona Cubs
Friday – The last game of Arizona’s season ended in a 7-6 loss.

Performances of Note

  • [Iowa] Dallas Beeler pitched the first 7 innings of Saturday’s shutout, and allowed 4 hits and 3 walks while striking out 4 in the process. Armando Rivero and Blake Parker each struck out 2 in an inning of relief.
  • [Iowa] Home runs this weekend were provided by Ryan Kalish (his 7th and 8th), Jonathan Mota (his 3rd), and Eli Whiteside (his 6th).
  • [Iowa] Kris Bryant has not homered in a week, a span in which he has just 4 hits. Random slump, or full-season fatigue? Either way, he’ll get a chance to rest up soon.
  • [Iowa] In addition to his homer, Jonathan Mota tripled and finished the weekend with 6 hits.
  • [Tennessee] C.J. Edwards and Pierce Johnson both kept it close in their doubleheader starts, but a lack of run support and some bullpen struggles doomed both efforts.
  • [Tennessee] Anthony Giansanti had the Smokies only home run of the weekend. It was his 3rd in Double A this year.
  • [Tennessee] Christian Villanueva also had a nice a weekend. He finished with 5 hits, including a pair of doubles.
  • [Daytona] On Sunday Justin Amlung pitched 5 strong innings, striking out one and allowing just 3 hits.
  • [Daytona] The weekend homers came from Dan Vogelbach (his 16th) and Marco Hernandez (his 3rd).
  • [Daytona] Gioskar Amaya concluded the weekend with a double, 5 hits, and his 14th stolen base.
  • [Kane County] Jonathan Martinez pitched all of Friday’s rain shortened contest. In his 5.1 innings he allowed 4 hits (including a solo homer) and struck out 4.
  • [Kane County] Kane County homers came from Trey Martin (his 5th), Jeimer Candelario (6th), and Cael Brockmeyer (8th).
  • [Kane County] Yasiel Balaguert doubled and finished up the weekend with 5 hits.
  • [Kane County] A big part of Kane County’s success this season has been their running game, and that was on display this weekend as Shawon Dunston raised his total to 27 steals, and Carlos Penalver added his 21st.
  • [Boise] Justin Marra hit his 9th homer for the Hawks this weekend, and Gleyber Torres hit his first.
  • [Boise] Kevin Brown doubled and finished the weekend with 5 hits.
  • [Boise] Sunday’s starter, Trevor Clifton, struck out 4 over 5 innings of 3 hit, one run ball.
  • [Arizona] Eloy Jimenez tripled for the second time this season.
  • [Arizona] Shamil Ubiera finished with 2 hits and his 7th steal. Calvin Graves finished with 2 hits and his 4th steal.
  • Other News

  • Iowa’s shutout on Saturday was their fifteenth this year. That figure leads the Pacific Coast League and extends the previously set franchise record for shutouts in a season.
  • Now that Arizona’ season is over, they will no longer be appearing in the Daily. Iowa and Tennessee will also vanish after their seasons end. The playoff teams will continue to get write ups so long as they are still playing, although I may abandon this format as the number of teams dwindles.
