Cubs Prospects All Over in AFL Action Yesterday and Other Bullets

vogelbach amayaAfter a late night drive, I am in Chicago for today’s season ticket holder event (thoughts on last year’s iteration here and here). I imagine it will be heavy on getting folks pumped up for 2015, but there is also typically a Q&A that proves to be interesting and sometimes informative. Hopefully I’ll have something good for you after the session at noon. Be forewarned: my memory is that the cell service at the location ranges from poor to non-existent, so I may not be able to do too much while in the session.

  • It was a Cubs-prospect-heavy day for the Mesa Solar Sox last night at Cubs Park in Mesa, with all of Addison Russell, Dan Vogelbach, and Jacob Hannemann starting the game. It was something of a mixed bag, with Hannemann doubling and walking in his four plate appearances, and Addison Russell failing to notch a hit or a walk, but he did get hit by a pitch. Vogelbach’s day was a weird one, with two strikeouts and three walks. He was also thrown out trying to take third from first on a single at one point.
  • C.J. Edwards is scheduled to start tomorrow for the Solar Sox, as he looks to make up innings he lost to a shoulder strain this season. Carrie Muskat has a great write-up on Edwards at Cubs.com, including his updated height and weight: 6’3″, 170 lbs. You’d like to see another 15 to 20 pounds on there, but it sounds like he’s not quite as string-beany as he was over the last few years. With health, he’s hoping to reach the big leagues in 2015.
  • Is it possible? Absolutely. Consider this: in 2015, Edwards will already be on the 40-man roster (to protect from Rule 5 Draft), and could very well start out at AAA Iowa. From there, his development is the priority, but if there’s a need in the rotation or the bullpen, he’s just a stop away. With Edwards, as he builds up innings and exposure to better opposition, I can envision a scenario where he reaches the bigs at midseason in 2015, and works out of the bullpen as a way to manage innings and get him working against big league hitters. Other teams have done this kind of thing with great success, and Edwards seems like a reasonable candidate for that kind of short-term transition.
  • It looks like Cubs catching prospect Wilson Contreras and Cubs pitching prospect(ish) Yoanner Negrin are playing in the Venezuelan Winter League (CCO).
  • Manny Ramirez is looking to work with Javier Baez this offseason in Miami (CSN).
  • Could the Dodgers go after Andrew Friedman if they fire Ned Colletti?
