First post to this site, but let's see what you all think. After listening/reading the constant talk on the radio/this site of whether the NL should switch to having a DH play the game, I can honestly say, I hope they don’t. Here are my arguments and I’ll use 2012 numbers. It’s not about the wins and loss records. Traditionally, the AL beats the NL in head to head games. This is where the DH argument tries to win its case. In 2012, the AL spent 142-110 against the NL. I’ll go one step further for there argument. In the past 10 years, the AL, wins more games every single time, sometimes it’s not even close. These wins can be explained, because the AL spends more money per year than the NL. In 2012, the average AL team spent slightly more than 12 million dollars more on payroll than the average NL team. The average NL team spent 92,157,821.75 per year versus 104,802,740.71.
Fan attendance has a different story, where more NL fans make it out to the park then AL fans. In 2012, there was a 200,000-fan difference between the NL and the AL that year. The average amount of fans coming to the ballpark is 2,592,218.44 for the NL and 2,384,555.21 for the AL. Wouldn’t more fans go to the AL games if they preferred it? They are winning more games every year in interleague play after all. The World Series has a similar story, where in the past 10 years. The NL wins 6 times to the AL’s 4.
Here are the sites that I used, (since there are lots of statistics).
