I want to move the attention away from the Bullpen and onto some fantasy trades. The trade market probably wont pick up much steam until June but who will be the first guy traded??
My money is on David Dejesus and his .278/.343/.522 with a wRC+ 135 line. The word solid may be the best to describe David. Solid lead off, Solid on base skills and solid defense. At worst he's one of the best 4th outfielders in the bigs.
My guess on the return is a guy who could slot into our 10-20 top prospects and maybe someone else. Just more than the Fukudome trade please.
Why this looks so good on paper.
The Cubs are carrying 6 outfielders that only play the outfield. This is very weird and something I don't think I've ever seen before. They also have a ton left handed hitters in the system which is a stark contrast to some of the older Cub teams.
Moving DeJesus opens up a spot (or more PT) for either
Julio Borbon and his career .283/.325/.357 line with 5.2% walk rate and 12.8% K rate. His plus defense and speed help offset the lack of on base skills but he sounds too much like Darwin Barney to me with more speed...not bad but a decent 8th hitter.
Ryan Sweeney is destroying AAA pitching and has 1900 MLB PAs leading to a .280/.338/.378 line. Similar defender to DeJesus it looks like. 8.25% walk rate and 17.1% k rate so those aren't too bad. Definitely a possibility here for lead off.
Yet Sweeney still only plays the OF which leaves some to be desired so my most balanced situation would be....
The 21ist round pick from 2008 (w/600K bonus) that has climbed a level per year and personal favorite of many BN'rs.
Logan Watkins and his current .270/.430/.449 line. Last season for AA he hit 11 triples, 9 bombs and stole 28 bases.
Yes he is also left handed...surprise...primarily a 2B men with 339 career games but he also has 44 games in CF and 97 at SS. He's versatile! and the Wichita Wizard of walks.
How he provides balance
Barney is one of my favorite players and in a slump so it just makes watching him bat that much worse. He should be relegated to semi-regular. Watkins would split time with Barney at Second. Barney can then give Castro a day off(maybe?) and pick up some time at 3B. Borbon and Watkins split CF a long with Sappelt.
Service time shouldn't be an issue since I doubt Watkins will break the bank during arbitration and he can give so much more offensively.
Other guys that might make an appearance....Brian Bogusevic(Plays 1b also), Brett Jackson, more Dave Sappelt, and everyone's favorite little Brent Lillibridge. Josh Vitters (3B, 1B, LF) Ian Stewart, Alberto Gonzalez.
What do you guys think? Who will be the first to leave for a contending club?
