Upland is the bomb-digity. I'm hoping to make it there for lunch today.

Deal!!!

By the way, CNN (I think that's who it was) just did a best beer town and everything was east coast or west coast with one in the middle. I guess they don't like us flyover states either. In their estimation Portland won. Apparently they have over 50 craft breweries.

Portland beers are fine.  Not consistently great, but fine.

I'm not sure of the geographic limits of this (stupidly, and incredibly, unscientific) poll, but there really is no other concentration of ultra high-quality breweries than there is in San Diego County.

Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids and Bloomington all have a good brewery.  Or two.  But the critical mass of high-quality brews in San Diego County is unequaled.

In fact, if the breweries weren't so damn spread out, Mendocino County could give SD County a run for its money, too.

Kalamazoo has Bells, Bilbos, Olde Peninsula, had the Kraftbrau (RIP), and there's a new one starting up pretty soon.  within 30 miles there's New Holland, Arcadia, and Dark Horse.

Gotcha.  So KZoo has a good brewery.  Or three.

Still, as good as those breweries may be, they don't approach the San Diego County numbers.

You can have all the San Diego beers and just leave me in San Fran with North Coast Brewing Co. and their Old Rasputin.

North Coast is in Fort Bragg, which is up on Mendocino County -- about 3 hours north of SF.

That's like claiming Uptown is a South Bend brewery!  The horror!

Here's the problem KZoo and GR are roughly 45 min apart and there great brews scattered throughout West Michigan.  By giving KZoo, GR, and Ann Arbor a vote the Michigan vote is going to get split and none of us will get the title.

Now I know this is all bullshit on a basic level but the Michigan economy needs any boast it can get and according to all the press GR got a huge boost from being the Co-Beer City USA last year combined with Ashville, but if the Michigan vote is split between three locations it would suck.  NOW if GR or KZoo are one and two... well that would be awesome.

Oops, I thought the bar I was at was a brew pub. It must have been a tap room for them. None the less, it was outstanding.

Oh, and it is Upland not Uptown. It is named after the area which geologists call the Norman and Crawford Uplands. Unlike most of Indiana, the Uplands were not overrun with glaciers. Left unchanged, the topography is much like southern California with hollows and heavily wooded areas.
