The Chicago Cubs will be looking for a few pieces this offseason, but a utility player is not expected to be one of them. So what is this quote all about?
DeRosa, coming off wrist surgery, figures to field an offer from the Chicago Cubs, at the least. STLtoday.com.
With Jeff Baker, Jake Fox, and (dear God) Aaron Miles in the fold for next year, it’s hard to imagine the Cubs going after DeRosa in a utility role. It is fathomable that they could approach him with a more regular second base role in mind – fathomable, but not preferable. DeRosa is clearly best suited to be a utility player, particularly at this stage in his career.
Further, DeRosa really struggled this year after wrist issues mucked up his performance, resulting in surgery last week. Although he’s supposed to be ready for the Spring, it does give you pause.
The source for the information in the quote is unclear. It is probably more along the lines of speculation than “rumor.”
