According to Ken Rosenthal, the Chicago Cubs have claimed 1B/OF Shane Peterson off of waivers from the Oakland A’s.
If this proves to be accurate – no reason to doubt Rosenthal – I’ll dive in a little more on Peterson. The short version is that he’s been a quality minor league bat for a while now (lefty), is 26, and has options left. He could, then, be a AAA depth piece for the Cubs with a chance to contribute in the outfield, or serve as an emergency fill-in if there were ever an Anthony Rizzo injury. Gotta have someone like that down at Iowa.
The big question: if Peterson has indeed been claimed, who goes off the 40-man? The 40-man roster is full as of this moment, after the signing of Jason Motte.
(Confession: the other reason for the short take is that The Little Boy has been home sick with me today, and needs attention. It’s been a very busy day.)
