Today there is one less Cub fan than there was yesterday.  My dad finally passed away after a 6 month illness.  Dad was a pretty decent left-handed first baseman back in the day.  He loved baseball, and passed that along to me.  He always made time to play catch or attend a little league game even after a long day at work.  He may never have had the chance to see his Cubs in the World Series, but I'm sure he will keep watching from up there.

Thanks Dad.

My whole hearted condolences. I know what it is like to lose a great father and mentor. Hold solace that he had a great son he loved and could share his passions with. I can't say it gets easy, but to do find the memories come back and have a different and more meaningful feeling than before. My prayers will go out to you and I hope you hold the dear memories close at this time and not the end. The journey is always sweeter than the ending. If there is anything we can do for you please don't hesitate to ask.

Thanks gang.

He was not in any pain, and had come to grips with it before the end.  I am thankful that I had a chance to have a heart to heart discussion with him and thank him for all the things he taught me.

He did keep his sense of humor right up to the end:

Last night, he took his big mug of diet 7-Up and started pouring it into his plastic urinal.

My brother said, "Dad, what the hell are you doing?"

Dad said "Just trying to eliminate the middle man."

Always leave them laughing!

Sorry to hear about your loss, Phil.

My own father passed 7 years ago this month. Still feels like yesterday in some ways, but it took about two years to finally stop reaching for the phone to call him (esp. when someone made a big (or bonehead) play in a televised game).

A friend told me at the time that losing a parent is like losing a limb. You get used to it eventually and the pain dulls, but you never really stop feeling like a part of you is missing.

Sorry Phil...

Your "One less Cub fan" title, is simple...yet very poignant and deep at the same time. It illustrates to me how this fandom we share is a big part of who we are...like any personality trait. I hope this does not come out sounding wrong, but there may be one less Cub fan, but I am guessing that in your dads time on this earth there was a net gain that he added to.

Take care....

All the love this goat has to you and your family. Your dad created the dirty little puppet we all cherish and his sense of humor has lived on with you. Now I'm going to call my Dad. Thanks for sharing and reminding us of what's really important.
