So I know that the Cubs aren't really in a position to spend money on bullpen help next year. I get that. So this doesn't even have to just apply to them, but I'm starting to think that Tim Lincecum could be a very attractive FA next year... as a closer.

He was electric last year in the playoffs coming from the pen. He has really good stuff and when he can really rear back and throw it could become dominant, again.

Personally, I wouldn't mind the Cubs taking a flyer on him, for the bullpen role, if the price is right. I don't know how willing he'd be to move to that role, but it could be a good fit for him, imo. Am I crazy or could this actually be a good fit?

I have thought and said the same thing. The problem is that some organization is going to take a chance on him and spend decent money to try and reclaim what he had.

Yeah, that's what I think will happen too. Although, maybe if he continues to struggle this year a smart FO (cough, Theo/Jed, cough) can convince him that he will succeed more and lenghten his career by a move to the bullpen.

I have an affinity for Lincecum (::glares at the peanut gallery:: ), and I'd like to see this happen.  But if it fails, I'd prefer to see it happen to some other team.

The problem w/ Lincecum is that he's getting paid $22 fucking million dollars, and he's a free agent for the first time after this season. (And ya thought Marmol was overpaid?)  No closer's worth even half that much, and I cannot see Lincecum taking a 2/3 pay cut to change roles.

Since he cut his hair does that mean you are cutting yours as well?

I've thought the same thing, multiple times.

I am against signing any sort of large FA contract for a reliever. You can find just as reliable arms off the scrap heap (Rodney) as you can signing high risk big deals (League, Broxton....Marmol.....)

I don't think anyone here was advocating a large contract to him. That's why he won't go the reliever route. Another organization will sign him as a starting pitcher.

Damn, did Lincecum fall fast... Once thought as one of the top pitching aces, now reaching the levels of Mark Prior.  Too soon? ;)

I know, I know. Two different scenarios, but I still wanted to say it.

He's not injured, but he's a little guy with a wacky delivery who has thrown a lot of innings and losing velocity as he wears down.  More Big Z than Prior sans insanity
