Cubs’ Minor League Daily: Tracking Wiseman

Thanks in no small part to the CBA imposed draft budget limitations, the Cubs were unable to sign 2012 25th round draft pick Rhett Wiseman. While the outfielder is no where near the same caliber of prospect as Albert Almora, he would have been a nice additional piece to the farm system had there been room in the budget.

Of course, nothing says the Cubs are done with Wiseman forever. Under Tim Wilken (who is still holds a key role in the Cubs’ front office) the Cubs have made a habit of redrafting out of college players they drafted out of high school and could not sign a few years prior. Tony Zych is one such example. Andrew Cashner was another example (although in his case, the Cubs selected him from college twice), and there are plenty of others. There is no reason the Cubs could not take take Wiseman with a pick at the back of the first or second round three years from now.

With that in mind, it does not hurt to keep tabs on Wiseman (as well as other possible future redraftees for the Cubs). Wiseman recently picked up some accolades from Baseball America for his play in the Futures League. The soon to be Vanderbilt freshman was considered to be the best prospect in that league despite his low offensive numbers.

Scores From Yesterday

Iowa – Iowa lost another close one, 4-3.
Tennessee – Tennessee bounced back into the win column with this 4-3 victory.
Daytona – The Daytona Cubs had the day off on Sunday. They now head home, and the weather forecasts for Daytona Beach suggest that this team may not play many more games this season.
Peoria – The Chiefs took a shut out into the ninth and wound up with a convincing 10-3 win.
Boise – The Boise offense sputtered a bit in this 5-1 loss.
Arizona – The AZL Cubs beat the division leading A’s 5-2.

Performances of the Day

  • [Iowa] Chris Rusin continues to pitch well. He took the loss in this game, but he allowed just four hits over seven innings while striking out seven. That will usually get the job done.
  • [Tennessee] Trey McNutt allowed a lone hit in his two innings of relief.
  • [Tennessee] Jae-Hoon Ha doubled and tripled as part of his three hit night. The outfielder has been hot lately; he is sporting a .955 OPS in his last ten games.
  • [Peoria] Jeffry Antigua lowered his Low-A ERA to 1.53 with his seven shutout innings. The promising young lefty allowed just three hits and struck out seven.
  • [Peoria] Pin-Chieh Chen doubled, walked, and stole his 33rd base of the year.
  • [Boise] Jeimer Candelario enjoyed his third consecutive multi-hit game on Sunday.
  • [Boise] Su-Min Jung pitched 1.2 scoreless innings in relief.
  • [Arizona] Juan Paniagua pitched 1.2 innings of hitless relief in which he struck out three.
  • [Arizona] Carlos Penalver doubled and walked as part of his two hit game on Sunday, and in doing so he raised his OPS over the last ten games to .754.
  • Other Minor League Notes

  • Looking for the next big, slugging, former collegiate corner infielder in the mold of Rebel Ridling, Justin Bour, Greg Rohan, or Paul Hoilman? Take a good look at Jacob Rogers who the Cubs drafted out of a junior college in Florida this summer. The 6’5″left handed hitter posted a .999 OPS in Arizona to start his professional career. He has struggled a bit since being promoted to Peoria, but with hits in three of his last four games, including a home run on Sunday, he is showing signs of coming around. For now I am listing him as a fringe type of player, but he should get ample opportunity to play his way into a better grading over the next couple of seasons.
  • Since I started this Daily by talking about the draft, let me answer the logical question before it gets asked. Yes, it is much too early for me to start speculating about who the Cubs might take in 2013. They will have a very high draft position and that means they should come out of the draft with a couple of very good players, but it is too soon to try to figure out who they might be. Odds are quite good that the actual selection will be someone none of us are considering right now anyway. After all, how many had heard of Albert Almora twelve months ago?
