I would guess this means the Cubs plan on Szczur being on the major league club in no less than 3 years.

I think that once a player has been placed on the 40 man roster, the team has the option to send him back down for part or all of 3 separate seasons. I don't think you are using an option when you place a player on the 40 man roster - it's only when you decide to send them back to the minors.

Or it was just another bad contract Hendry offered to a draftee a la Samardzjia. Talk about handcuffing an organization with these contracts.

That is correct, but I was just counting the option (year) as burnt since there is no way Szczur was breaking camp with the big league club this year.I think that once a player has been placed on the 40 man roster, the team has the option to send him back down for part or all of 3 separate seasons. I believe injury is the reason why this could happen. I want to say Angel Guzman got an extra option year because of that.Szczur will have an option used in 2012, 2013, and 2014 and will most likely need to be on the 25 man in 2015 (barring an extra option year given, I can't recall the reasons why this would happen)

I agree...I think it has to do with 60 day DL time (since you are removed from the 40 man, etc)
