For most humans(of moderate intelligence or higher) we gain a bit of wisdom as we age. As a 44 year old, I look back at shi...errr, stuff I did, thought, believed or cared about when I was in my 20's and 30's and I am aghast. Most of us have this feeling at some point or another, because most of us...grow up. Apparently Hawk Harrelson has never grown up.
Hawk is 71 years-old, has had a nice career as a baseball player(why, just ask him!), a pseudo 60's celebrity, and as the White Sox play by play announcer. (His tenure as General Manager...was...not so good) Hawk should be content and enjoy what life has dealt him. Yet here are some quotes from Hawk in a recent Chicago Sun-Times article regarding the 2013 White Sox season.
"It's been hell on me, I can tell you that" (regarding the season)
"To watch them, the way they've played, it's hard to take."
"From an announcing standpoint, I take it personally"
"I have to bite my tongue a lot because the culture of the game has changed"
"I've said fewer words in a 68-game period then I have in my career. Because it's been horse-sh$% baseball. Because silence is the great communicator"
"What am I going to say? There isn't a thing I can say to embellish that moment."
Full disclosure, I have never been a fan of Hawk, but I was appalled by this article. Where to begin?
The season has been "hell"...really Hawk...really? Hell is the living conditions of some of the people on the south-side, Hell is watching a loved one die of cancer, Hell is dealing with an abusive past...I could keep going and going, but I think you get my point. Do you know how many people...professional people...would love to have your job? Ask some of the guys working in local radio...see if they wouldn't jump at the chance to go through your "hell". Quit if it is "hell", and see how quickly you are replaced.
"Silence is the great communicator"...this might be one of the most moronic statements I have heard. Silence can be golden, silence can send a message, but a great communicator? I must admit I have found Hawk's silence hysterical for years because that means he is upset. "What am I going to say", "can't embellish" what nonsense! That's part of the flippin' job you idiot !(your North-Side counterparts embellish daily)...Announcing is communicating you pompous ass.
I will get off my soapbox now, but one last thing. I said I found his silence hysterical, but also what follows the silence. I have been doing a Hawk imitation for years...it goes something like this....
15 to 20 seconds of silence with crowd noise...then Hawk's voice(with no excitement what so ever) "well, that's the fifth unassisted triple play of the day by the Angels"
...then more silence
