I know everyone at some point has heard the Jeter and Castro comparisons, I also know a lot, pretty much all of you have given up on Castro. But this should show about just how good he can be given time.

Starlin Castro first four seasons: .287/.326/.409, 611 hits, 31 HRs, 211 RBIs, 333/114 K/BB, 64 SBs
*Castro's 4th season is still in progress.

Derek Jeter first four season: .294/.354/.422, 588 hits, 39 HRs, 239 RBIs, 357/183 K/BB, 67 SBs

It's worth noting Castro came into the league as a 19 year old, Jeter as a 21 year old, so there's that.

If I remember what I read in Jonah Keri's book correctly, Derek Jeter's defense, while flashy, was piss poor his first few years as well.

I agree.  My post about asking what's up about him was more of parody than anything else, since the panic about this is hilarious.

I love that Jeter play against the A's in the playoffs.  Talk about thinking on your feet.

The difference is that Jeter was clearly improving. In his first 4 years, his OPS+ was 74 (just 15 games), 102, 103, 127. Jeter's errors went from 2 (in 15 games), 22, 18, 9. His dWAR went -0.3 (again, just 15 games), -0.2, 0.7, 1.1.  Jeter's WAR: 0.3, 3.3, 4.9, 7.5. I could go on, but the picture of good progress is clear.

I'm not saying Castro is horrible, should be traded, or anything other than that the Jeter comparisons are not valid. My disappointment is that if Castro's first two years had been followed by Jeter-like improvement, then we'd have a HOF player.

Players regress when they don't have similar surroundings from year to year losing managers, hitting coaches, teammates, etc all have negative effects on players playing and mindset.

Jeter's defense is, has been, and always will be way over rated.

Biggest thing is the difference in OBP. Castro with a 350 OBP is a good player.
