The True Window of Contention, Second Round Options, Bashing Dunn, and Other Bullets

I have a sports card problem.

I set a goal for myself that over this summer I would finally find time to organize the thousands of basketball, baseball, and football cards that I have gathered/been given over the years. Now, I have cards scattered throughout my room in organized piles that probably only make sense to me. The process of going through them can be so conflicting. Finding a 1990 Ken Griffey Jr. card is fun, so is coming back across a 1991-92 All-Star Scottie Pippen, but then you hit a stack of 20 B.J. Armstrong cards and begin to question yourself. I also have the entire 660 Topps card set from 2009, can you tell me why I did this?

Anyway, morale is low, and I’m not sure I can contin– Oh! Look, a 1988 Lee Smith card!

  • It’s more important than ever for Gar/Pax to begin making the right moves, and NBC Sports Chicago’s Mark Strotman gives a good outline of what those moves may be. He points out that the Bulls true window for contention might be 2021 and beyond, and all the decisions made before then should be made with that in mind. Heading into the 2021 season, the cap space has the potential to grow into max-contract money.
  • I could get into so much of what he wrote about, but you should really just go give it a read for yourself. I will leave you with this, though: The biggest takeaway is how the Bulls should approach this year’s free agency. The team has to avoid constraining themselves with three to four-year long contracts and focus on grabbing some short-term veteran talent to help let the young players shine. The more these young studs can develop on the court, the more intriguing the team will be to top-of-the-line free agents in the coming years.

  • Several mock drafts have the Bulls taking Cam Reddish with the No. 7 pick in the draft. Personally, I remain fully aboard the draft a point guard train, but you can’t discredit the amount of attention this guy continues to get from NBA scouts.
  • The Chicago Tribune’s K.C. Johnson did a Bulls Q&A, and the majority of questions were in one way or another related to the point guard position. Importantly, he believes that Dunn’s chances of being around next season are higher than not, which, yeah, I agree. Unless Dunn is packaged in a larger deal (i.e. a three-team trade), I just can’t see him being shipped out of Chicago right now. I guess it’s always possible to try and swoon a naive team into taking him along with the No. 7 draft pick, but it just feels too unlikely.
  • I will say though, this Kris Dunn bashfest (that was really started by the front office) is a little uncalled for. The guy is getting a lot of blame for an overarching problem. He has plenty of NBA talent, and I really do like watching him play. Chicago just feels like a negative place for him right now. If interested, I had more thoughts on this in Tuesday’s Bullets.
  • Awkwardly, this was against the Bulls, but who cares! Can we just permanently put a Jordan jersey on the goat emoji?
  • Bulls head coach Jim Boylen fell victim to the new baby filter craze going around the social media world. My biggest question is why does he look like Nikola Jokic?

  • Endless talk has been had about who the Bulls should draft with the No. 7 pick, but there’s limited discussion on where the Bulls turn in round 2. Getting a good second round pick comes with a decent amount of luck, but if a team chooses correctly, it can pay off big-time down the road. Michael Walton of NBA Sports Chicago broke down why Kansas’ Dedric Lawson could be a good move for the Bulls at No. 38. The forward could add some nice depth on the bench and at only 21-years-old, he already plays a pretty mature style of basketball. He averaged a double-double last season with 19.4 ppg and 10.3 rebounds per game. He is aggressive in the paint and helps keep possessions alive. I never thought too much about him, but he was a good college player and could be a solid investment. Check out Walton’s article and decide for yourself.
