Mike Cameron will not be the Chicago Cubs’ next center fielder.
The Boston Red Sox have reached a tentative agreement on a two-year deal with free agent outfielder Mike Cameron, a baseball source told ESPN.com on Monday.
The deal would be for $7 million to $8 million annually, according to The Associated Press.
Cameron will have to pass a physical exam for the deal to become official. ESPN Boston.
Cameron is the best free agent center fielder, but included in that evaluation was supposed to be Cameron’s bargain price tag. Two years and $15+ million is not a bargain, and makes the Cubs’ failure to sign him – notwithstanding that they have not yet moved Milton Bradley – understandable. That said, the deal makes me absolutely terrified to think about what Marlon Byrd might command.
At some point, we will have to ask ourselves: is keeping Milton Bradley really a worse option than big money for Marlon Byrd? Or being stuck with Rick Ankiel or Scott Podsednik? And that’s coming from someone who railed on Milton Bradley all year in 2009.
