Hey, there’s the Cubs’ offense! Coors Field and Kyle Kendrick combined to be the Cubs’ primary antidote to early-season struggles, and the club notched its first three homers of the season. Dexter Fowler had a huge game out of the leadoff spot, the Cubs were drawing walks, the Cubs were putting the ball in play, etc. It was great in a lot of ways that the first three games of the year had not been.
Jason Hammel was fantastic through six innings. Sure, he gave up the obligatory Coors homer, but he walked no one and struck out six.
On the downside, Mike Olt, who hit one of those homers, took a late pitch off of his wrist, and it didn’t look or sound good. He was immediately in obvious pain, and left with the trainer. Hopefully he’ll be OK. Whatever was going to happen in a week or two, Olt is the Cubs’ best shot at a regular, everyday third baseman right now, in large part because he’s so good with the glove.
As for the box score, well, I can’t help myself, and I know it’s just awful …
