It looks like today is going to be Addison Russell Day.
Just one day after it started to look like the Cubs’ next big-time infield prospect would be up sooner rather than later, the Chicago Cubs are indeed calling up the 21-year-old shortstop, according to multiple reports. Russell, a natural shortstop, has been playing second base in recent days at AAA Iowa, and that’s where he’ll slide in for the Cubs, who’ve really struggled at the position.
The expectation here is that Russell will probably replace Arismendy Alcantara on the 25-man roster, so that the struggling youngster can head to Iowa and get regular starts to work on his swing. As for a 40-man spot, the Cubs will have to move someone out or put someone on the 60-day DL to create space.
I’ll have much more on Addison Russell Day later, of course. (Oh, and I didn’t see until now that Luis put something up on the call-up last night. Nicely done, Luis.)
