As I have said before, I'm an assistant for a high school baseball team (I prefer to work with the pitchers, but do other random stuff). It's the same school I went to high school at, but the team has made huge strides in the last 4 years, since we got a new head coach. If you guys are really interested, I can give more details and update you as things go throughout the season.
My motive for starting this thread stems from some really cool news we just received from one of our players, though. We had a freshman pitcher last year who was pretty good for us; 2.19 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, and 32 K's to 8 BB's.. granted he normally pitched against weaker competition. That's still impressive for a freshman, right? Well he goes to a bunch of camps and got invited to try out for Team USA this summer. They took 150 kids that will graduate in 2016 and let them play against each other to decide who would make the team. Well, that try out was this week. Throughout the week he was sending me pictures of players he got to meet; the list includes Evan Longoria, Ben Zobrist (his brother played in our Sectional. He was good, and his team was REALLY good), and Sergio Romo. Well, I didn't really have high hopes for our guy in this... but I figured him struggling vs some of the top talent in his class would be good for him...
These are the texts we got from him yesterday:
"Hey Coach just wanted to tell you that I made the All-American Games 1st team and will play in the Gold Medal Games next year for team USA!"
"First game I pitched 3 innings gave up 4 hits and had 5 strikeouts. The last game I pitched 2 innings and gave up 1 hit with 5 strikeouts."
We are a small school (2A in Illinois) who hasn't had success in baseball. So this is a pretty cool thing for our program! We're all pretty excited about it!
