Jon Lester, and the defense plus some bad luck behind him, dug a deep early hole with a four spot in the second inning, which Lester later followed by allowing back-to-back homers to Giancarlo Stanton (understandable) and Jeff Baker (tisk tisk). The Cubs couldn’t come back.
The Cubs did manage to get three runs in the 6th, including a two-run Junior Lake bomb that led to some extracurricular activity. Lake watched his homer a little too long in the Marlins’ eyes – and he added a bat flip after taking a few steps – and they were (presumably) jawing at him as he rounded third. Lake responded with a “shhh” (not a good idea) and catcher JT Realmuto had some words for Lake as he crossed home. Lake responded, and the benches cleared. There was lots of yelling and a little shoving, but it wasn’t too serious.
No finishing moves.
