Mike Glennon Speaks: Importance of Reps, Learning, Improving, Developing Chemistry, More

Like John Fox before him, Mike Glennon, who enters the 2017 season as the Bears QB1, shared some thoughts on a number of topics on the first day of the Chicago Bears’ mandatory mini-camp.

You can watch the video link here, or see it embedded below. Here are the highlights alongside some additional thoughts of my own:

  • In a camp that features three quarterbacks (make it four if you count the sidelined Mark Sanchez) every practice snap matters. That was one of the points Glennon attempted to drive home while meeting with the assembled media at Halas Hall after Tuesday’s practice. “Every rep counts. Every time I’m out there, it’s probably the first time I’ve run the play in this particular offense. Every time I’m out there, it matters. The more we do that, the more we’ll grow as an offense.”
  • Once again, Glennon finds himself learning a new system, but is now doing so as the primary quarterback. However, Glennon isn’t alone in learning a new system, as he points out that a healthy chunk of the Bears’ group of receivers isn’t just new to him, but new to the team as well. As it turns out, that is a challenge within the challenge that both ends of the pass-and-catch spectrum are facing in offseason workouts. As the Bears build toward the preseason, the most important development will be making sure each member of the offense is on the same page and working toward executing on a high level.
  • It’s safe to say that at this stage, the Bears are still a work in progress on the offensive side of the ball. Glennon realizes it and seems comfortable as he and his teammates work toward acclimating themselves to Dowell Loggains’ offense in a practice setting. “It’s going to be an ongoing process,” said Glennon of working in a new offense with a group of skill position players who are also new to the offense. “I think there’s been some good things and some things we gotta work on. That’s what these OTAs and mini-camps are for, those opportunities to get better.”
  • While Glennon believes the unit is improving in developing its on-field chemistry, one player Glennon will likely lean heavily on when throwing the pigskin is wide receiver Cameron Meredith, who will miss this round of practices with a thumb injury. The relationship between a quarterback and his top receiver is among the game’s most important bonds, and the Glennon-Meredith connection won’t be able to build theirs until training camp starts in six weeks. However, Glennon believes that this injury will allow other players to take advantage of additional reps (reminder: every rep matters). “When a guy like him goes down, other people have an opportunity to step up,” Glennon said. “That’s what I’m talking about in getting more reps.”
  • Behind him on the depth chart is Mitch Trubisky, who is taking Mark Sanchez’s share of snaps at the No. 2 quarterback in camp. There is no quarterback controversy or open competition in camp this year, but Trubisky is still battling to get into the groove offensively. To that end, Glennon praised his rookie backup. “He’s been great. He works really hard at it, asks questions, and he’s done a really good job as far as learning the offense, understanding what we’re trying to accomplish,” Glennon said. “And I think he’s done a great job picking that up for being a rookie.”
