As expected, Kyle Schwarber heads to AAA Iowa today, and the Cubs are replacing him on the big league roster with Matt Szczur.
Szczur, 25, returns to a .167/.225/.222 line with the big league club, where he hasn’t really shined this year in a reserve role – though, in fairness, he’s been up and down from Iowa rapidly this season.
Tonight, he starts in left field, and no-big-deal-welcome-back-to-the-big-leagues he faces Clayton Kershaw. Good luck, dude.
At Iowa, Szczur was hitting a much more robust .287/.361/.457. It’s possible he’ll stick around with the big league team until Jorge Soler is ready to return from his ankle sprain, which might be another week or two.
