Cubs Minor League Daily: IFA Season Arrives, Solid Wins on the Farm

latin americaThe timing could not be more perfect for the Cubs to effectively wrap up their 2015 draft (more on that in a moment), since starting today our eyes will be focused on the International Free Agents and all the activity that can come with the start of that season.

One notable shift in the IFA market occurred yesterday when the projected team for Lucius Fox shifted from the Dodgers to the Giants. And at a price, per FanGraphs, that the Dodgers shouldn’t have a hard time topping. Either the Dodgers aren’t interested in throwing endless money at people after all, or they aren’t all that high on Fox, or some other factor came into play. The important part for us, though, is that this is a strong indication that the Dodgers’ bottomless wallet will not guarantee that they get everything their own way.  That is good news for the Cubs.

Stay tuned for today’s IFA developments, as I’d imagine Brett will be tracking them throughout the day.

Scores From Yesterday

Iowa – Iowa regained the lead in the bottom of the 8th and turned that into a 4-3 win.
Tennessee – The Smokies were rained out.
Myrtle Beach – Two big innings helped lift the Pelicans to this 8-7 win.
South Bend – This game went into extra innings, but it was the Cubs who lost it 3-2.
Eugene – The Emeralds needed just two pitchers to secure this 6-2 win.
Arizona – Arizona had the day off.

Performances of Note

  • [Iowa] Carlos Pimentel pitched a pretty good game. Over 6 innings he allowed 2 runs (one earned) on 3 hits and a walk while striking out 9. At some point he could be an option for the Cubs in the majors.
  • [Iowa] Carl Edwards Jr. struck out 3 in 2 innings of work. He also allowed a run on 2 hits.
  • [Iowa] Kyle Schwarber doubled and finished 3 for 4. Junior Lake was 2 for 4 with a double.
  • [Myrtle Beach] Chesny Young doubled and finished with 2 hits. Jacob Rogers did the same.
  • [Myrtle Beach] Mark Zagunis had 2 hits, both singles, and a walk.
  • [Myrtle Beach] This game was pitched by committee for the Pelicans. Fernando Cruz (3 IP, 4 R, 6 H, 2 BB, 5 K) started the game, followed by David Garner (3 IP, 1 R, 4 H, 1 BB, 2 K), Juan Paniagua (2 IP, 1 R, 2 H, 1 BB, 1 K), and Jasvir Rakkar (1 IP, 1 R, 3 H, 2 K).
  • [South Bend] Gleyber Torres turned in another good game. He finished 3 for 5, stole 2 more bases (he’s up to 12 this season), and scored both of the Cubs’ runs.
  • [South Bend] Charcer Burks and Gioskar Amaya each turned in a 2 hit game.
  • [South Bend] Jordan Minch pitched 3 good innings of scoreless relief in this one. He allowed just 2 hits and 2 walks while striking out one.
  • [Eugene] Justin Steele struck out 6 over 6 innings of work while allowing 2 runs (one earned) on 4 hits and 2 walks. Francisco Carrillo allowed 3 hits and struck out 3 over the final 3 innings.
  • [Eugene] Eloy Jimenez homered for the second time this year and finished 3 for 4. Tyler Alamo added 2 hits.
  • [Eugene] Frandy Delarosa reached on a single and stole his 3rd base of the year.
  • Other News

  • Don’t forget that the Eugene Emeralds are playing in Hillsboro, and that means they are on MiLB.tv. If you want to see a very interesting group of 2015 college draftees and younger high ceiling types in action, this is one of your few chances this season.
  • Jasvir Rakkar has been added to the Canadian team roster for the Pan American Games that will take place July 11 through July 19. He joins Albert Almora and Dan Vogelbach on the list of Cubs’ farm hands that have been chosen for their respective national teams.
